During her speech in the Parliament, the Member of State of New Democracy expressed her support for the government’s legislative initiative for equality in civil marriage today Nefeli Hatziioannidou. “I support marriage equality precisely because I have never had to worry about this self-evident right,” Mrs. Hatziioannidou emphasized in her speech.

“This bill will not in the least affect my life, the rights and privileges I have, just as it will not affect the majority of MPs who are called to vote on it tomorrow. And while this particular bill practically does not “touch” me, I cannot help but recognize the profound impact it can have on the lives of those who have been denied the same opportunities that I had, due to their sexual orientation,” meaningfully noted ND MP.

“In politics you have to have firm values to which you remain faithful. But at the same time, you must be able to recognize the other point of view. To be able to be impartial and put some other higher values above your values and positions such as that of equality and equality. To feel, despite your personal beliefs, that you have a responsibility to defend even one of your fellow citizens who is wronged, one of your fellow citizens who is marginalized, even one of your fellow citizens who, while he has the same obligations as everyone else, in the years 2024 does not have the same rights. And of course, when this fellow citizen of yours is a child, this responsibility is even more imperative”, emphasized Mrs. Hatziioannidou.

“The Civil Marriage Equality Bill is not an attempt to erase tradition or challenge our cultural heritage. Rather, it is a call to support the fundamental values that define our democracy – equality, justice and the pursuit of happiness for every Greek citizen. The Civil Marriage Equality Bill doesn’t cut it the value of heterosexual marriages. On the contrary, it strengthens the fabric of our society by showing understanding and acceptance in the most practical way”, concluded the ND MP.
