Nikos Androulakis: The protection of the Greek borders is also a European affair

by

The President of PASOK and the Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis, with his intervention in the discussion of the annual Reports on the implementation of the Common Foreign, Security and Defense Policy, in the Plenary Session of the European Parliament, also spoke about the new armament program approved yesterday the Greek Parliament.

The entire position of Mr. Androulakis:

The protection of the sovereign rights of our homeland is our main priority. That is why today the Greek Parliament approved a high-cost armament program with the French government.

In 2022, Greece has the highest defense spending in the Union. However, it is inconceivable, at the moment when the Greek people are financing these programs with efforts and sacrifices, that there are European states, which continue to equip Turkey, strengthening its claims.

It is a matter of solidarity for the Council to decide on the imposition of an arms embargo on Turkey, as we voted in Parliament a year ago.

The absence of a truly European, common civil defense and security policy, implicitly burdens Greece, with responsibilities that we should all take on together.

Spending resources that we could save, to use in other sectors of the economy and especially in improving our welfare state.

The protection of the Greek borders is not only a Greek issue. It is also European. Initiatives such as PESCO and the European Defense Fund must move forward immediately if we are to have stability in the wider region.
