Ukrainian: Kyriakos Mitsotakis at crucial conferences in Brussels and Munich

by

The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be in Brussels today, Thursday and tomorrow, to participate in a crucial informal Summit on Ukraine and the EU-African Union Summit. At noon on Friday will depart for Munich to attend the annual Munich Security Conference at a critical geopolitical juncture, according to government sources.

According to the same sources, the EU Summit with African countries – which will be preceded by an informal meeting of members of the European Council to discuss the latest developments in Ukraine – seeks to lay the foundations for an ambitious EU-Africa partnership covering the full range of challenges, from green transition and climate change, to digital transformation and job creation; and migration and mobility.

The government’s strategic choice is to open up and strengthen relations with sub-Saharan Africa, something that is already under way through “vaccine diplomacy”, according to the same sources.

It is noted that Greece has already donated 3 million doses of vaccines to Africa.

Regarding the energy and the green transition of the African continent, it is underlined that Greece already has a key role as a bridge between Europe and Africa through Egypt.

The agreement that signed by Greece and Egypt last October for the electricity interconnection of the two countries, is the first project to connect Africa with Europe and turns our country into a bridge for the transfer of clean electricity from Africa to Europe, government sources note and emphasize that the Greek-Egyptian project has a great economic and geopolitical importance, as through it Europe can secure stable and cheap “clean” electricity and has already been recognized as of strategic importance by both the EU and the US.

Today, Thursday, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will also meet with Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, and will later attend a roundtable discussion on climate change and energy. , digitization and transport. On Friday morning, the prime minister will co-chair his Irish counterpart with a panel on agriculture and sustainable development, and will then leave to attend the Munich Security Conference.

There, he will speak at a panel on undermining democratic principles, together with the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Nancy Pelosi and German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht and coordinator Ivan Krastev, and has scheduled a series of contacts on the sidelines of the conference.
