“Dozens of our fellow citizens experienced moments of agony on a train today at noon,” says SYRIZA MP Vassilis Kokkalis
The immediate intervention of the Supreme Court on the situation in the Greek railway is requested by Vasilis Kokkalis then today’s incident on the Thessaloniki – Larisa Suburban Train
On the occasion of the complaints about today’s incident on the suburban railway running the Thessaloniki-Larissa route, the SYRIZA rapporteur in the investigation committee for the deadly crime of Tempe and member of parliament for Larissa, Mr. Vassilis Kokkalis, made the following statement:
“One year after the crime of Tempe that took the lives of 57 of our fellow citizens and a few hours after the Prime Minister’s speech in which Mr. Mitsotakis assured that the government must be the first to “uproot the failure with courage”, dozens of our fellow citizens lived today at noon anxious moments on a train. When the suburban train from Thessaloniki to Larissa, according to testimonies, faced a problem with its brakes, while a fire broke out in a carriage!
A year later, reality surpasses all imagination and irreparably exposes the government of the New Republic. Mr. Mitsotakis and others show that they have not even learned the obvious from the unjust death of 57 people in Tempi. A year later, the trains on the Greek railway, with the tolerance – complicity of the government, continue to run with constant problems, raising serious safety issues for the passengers.
Unfortunately, the position we expressed in the investigation, that the former Minister of Transport Mr. Karamanlis had not established national safety rules, is confirmed. And unfortunately, without safety rules, the Greek railway continues to operate today, contrary to what is expressly required by European legislation.
With the government looking dangerously indifferent, we immediately request the intervention of the highest judicial leadership of the country, so that all the necessary measures are taken, so that we do not mourn any more human lives”.
