“The nation that was once the ‘sick’ of Europe, has been cured. The country that once threatened to sink the European project has now become the model of its success. The Greeks put their minds to it, rejected populism and adopted rational economic policies.”

Credit was given to Greece by the leading journalist of the CNN television network Fareed Zakaria on his weekly show, emphasizing that the image of the country has changed drastically since Kyriakos Mitsotakis took over the government.

In his broadcast, which gathers a high viewership, the authoritative analyst traced the path of the Greek economy from a “lost cause”, which was looking for rescue packages from an “enraged European Union”, as he characteristically said, to an economy that “is growing faster than the European Union for several consecutive years and will repeat it in 2024.”

He made special reference to the recovery of the investment grade, which he assessed as “a symbolic victory for a country that went bankrupt in 2015, but also an economic victory, because it means more foreign investment.”

Fareed Zakaria highlighted the role of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, whom he said since being elected in 2019 “has cut taxes, worked to streamline government services and carried out market reforms. This helped the country achieve remarkable growth and pay off billions in debt ahead of schedule,” and added: “voters rewarded him handsomely, re-electing him last year with an overwhelming majority.”

The well-known analyst also referred to the emblematic reform of marriage equality, pointing out that “last month Greece legalized same-sex marriage. This may sound like Greece is just catching up to the West, but in the eastern half of Europe, it makes the country a leader. It also makes Greece the first Orthodox Christian nation to take this progressive step.”
