Kimbouropoulos: EU to respond to unacceptable practices of countries such as Turkey and Azerbaijan

The “unacceptable practices of states such as Turkey and Azerbaijan” concerning the Human Rightsstole the ND MEP, Stelios Kybouropouloswith his intervention in plenary session of European Parliamentstressing at the same time “the need for the EU to be resolute in order to meet its role and not to jeopardize its credibility”, as stated in a statement.

Mr. Kimbouropoulos stressed that “we live in 2022, our president [σ.σ.: εννοεί την πρόεδρο του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου] “She is a woman and yet we fight for gender equality.” As he said, “we speak to this Parliament as one of the symbols of democracy, but there are still countries with authoritarian regimes that oppress their people.” He immediately added: “For example, countries like Turkey, which withdrew from the Istanbul Convention, or other countries, which have withdrawn measures to combat violence against women. It is our duty to fight for women’s rights, especially with regard to worrying situations in third countries, such as the situation in Afghanistan. […] Other human rights are also threatened. “Like in Azerbaijan, where the government systematically destroys monuments and churches of Armenian-Christian heritage.”

Also, Mr. Kimbouropoulos, after emphasizing that “Greece has taken on its responsibilities”, noting that, among other things, “provided a safe haven for several Afghans who fled their country”, stressed: “We are really angry with such practices. We must do our best to stop them […] “Only in this way can the EU live up to expectations and prevent its credibility from being undermined.”
