PASOK’s parliamentary representative, Dimitris Manzos, criticized the government for its late response and attempt to downgrade the recent statements of the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, about Cyprus.

At the same time, commenting on the reports of the Turkish president in Cyprus, Mr. Manzos states that “the new unacceptable statements of the Turkish President, half a century after the Cyprus tragedy, prove for the umpteenth time that the Turkish government remains firmly committed to its revisionist narrative, which it not only violates international law but insults the historical memory and the drama of an entire people.”

The entire announcement of Mr. Mantzou:

The new unacceptable statements of the Turkish President, half a century after the Cyprus tragedy, prove for the umpteenth time that the Turkish government remains firmly committed to its revisionist narrative, which not only violates international law but also insults the historical memory and the drama of an entire people.

The long delay in the Government’s response and the attempt to downgrade the issue through “diplomatic sources” cannot diminish the seriousness of the new statements, which follow recent corresponding positions in relation to Cyprus, as well as the attempt to create fait accompli in the occupied territories.

It must be clear to everyone that the necessary Greece-Turkey rapprochement cannot exclude the Cyprus issue and the need for a fair and sustainable solution on the basis of the UN resolutions, with the mediation of the EU.

Otherwise, not only will it not have the benefits that our country seeks, but it can also be perceived as a margin for new challenges on the part of Turkey in Cyprus, on a verbal – and not only – level.

Besides, three months after the ceremonial signing of the “Athens Declaration”, the Government must answer whether it covers corresponding Turkish statements and attitudes, since, as the Minister of the Territory Mr. Voridis admitted today, “Turkey has not distanced itself from the offensive rhetoric”.
