Celebrations in the Turkish media for the conversion of the Monastery of Chora into a mosque by the decision of the Turkish president.

As Manolis Kostidis reports, the decision was made in 2020 by Erdogan, but it was “frozen” and since the day before yesterday it has been officially operating as a mosque after a grand opening ceremony that was also broadcast by satellite.

The Monastery of Chora is a monument of world cultural heritage, mainly for the late Byzantine hagiographies and mosaics that adorn the temple.

“Curtains cover the hagiographies and mosaics inside the space,” Turkish media reported.

“The monument which by the decision of the cabinet of 1945 had been turned into a museum and for 75 years it functioned as a museum. In 2020, it was transferred to the directorate of religious affairs and restoration work was carried out before opening for pilgrimage,” said the mufti of Istanbul.

Television network NTV: “The Kariye mosque for the first time in 79 years was opened for prayer. After the official ceremony, as you can see, the faithful come and pray. In 1985, this site was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Before on the walls there were different hagiographies and mosaics, and as you can see inside the prayer area the hagiographies and frescoes are thus covered with a curtain.

As soon as I heard the good news I came with my wife. I prayed and read the Qur’an and praise be to Allah.”

Television network ULKE TV: 1945 was the last Muslim prayer inside the Kariye Mosque, and after 79 years citizens again prayed with the namaz (Muslim prayer). God bless those who made this decision. Indeed they are wonderful. I liked it very much. In the conservation work, the authenticity of the hagiographies and mosaics was preserved. The hagiographies and wall paintings located inside the Kariye Mosque area are covered in this way and no damage is caused.”
