The need to take immediate measures to support EU member states in the face of possible increases in energy prices after the Russian invasion of Ukraine was stressed by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his attendance at the Extraordinary Summit in Brussels.
“We are here to build our defense against developments that may affect European economies. “I have called for the conclusions to include a provision that will authorize the Commission to study and propose directly to the Council the adoption of extensive measures to support Member States in the face of possible sharp increases in energy prices.”
In this way, said the Prime Minister, we will be able to protect ourselves from a possible blackmail of the Russian side and show that we remain steadfast in the path of defending international law.
At the same time, Kyriakos Mitsotakis condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine, noting that the EU response will be extremely dynamic and pointed out that the EU is united in taking harsh sanctions.
He pointed out that what is happening not only violates international law, but also calls into question global security.
His statement in detail:
“We are facing a development that, a while ago, seemed unthinkable. The largest military invasion of an independent country since World War II. What is happening in Ukraine is not just a violation of international law, it calls into question the whole security architecture of Europe and that is why the European Union’s response will be extremely dynamic.
We are here, together, to take decisions on harsh sanctions against Russia. We are here to demand the cessation of all hostilities as soon as possible, the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, and the guarantee of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
At the same time, we are here to prepare, to build, our defense against developments that may drown the European economies. I have called for the conclusions of the Extraordinary Session to include a provision which will authorize the European Commission to study and to propose to the Council that it take immediate measures to support Member States in the face of possible sharp increases in energy prices. “In this way we will be able to protect ourselves from possible blackmail by the Russian side, and show that we remain steadfast in defending international law and international legitimacy.”
