“We are giving the infrastructure across the country to a new generation of athletes to excel, to make us all proud again,” said the Prime Minister
Them Olympic facilities of Paenia which had been abandoned for years and are now being renovated, upgraded and turned into a high standard training center for Olympic sports the prime minister visited in the morning Kyriakos Mitsotakis. At the same time, the facilities are creating sports and cultural spaces for the residents of the region of eastern Attica.
“2024 is an Olympic year, but it also marks 20 years since the organization of the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. And the history of the Olympic Facilities summarizes in its own special and traumatic way the history of our country over the last 20 years. Olympic Facilities, which cost the Greek taxpayer a lot of money, from one point onward were literally left to languish, to be almost completely discredited and with the initiative of this government, in recent years they are being revived and are being used for the benefit of a new generation of athletes.
This is also the history of these two very important buildings, which are now an integral part of the OAKA complex. Here, by the end of the year, two state-of-the-art training facilities will be delivered, which will then be surrounded, with the support of the Region, by other open facilities in order to support the sporting activity of the wider society.
Step by step we are utilizing the endowment and wealth of the Olympic Facilities and giving the infrastructure across the country to a new generation of athletes to excel, to make us all proud again,” said the Prime Minister, who accompanied by the Deputy Minister Sports Yannis Vroutsiswas guided around the premises by Konstantinos HaliorisCoordinator – General Manager of OAKA, under whose management the facilities have fallen and was informed about the progress of their renovation and upgrading works, which are being implemented with the support of Lambda Development.
For his part, Deputy Minister of Sports Yannis Vroutsis noted: “This is truly an excellent sports center, which is harmoniously integrated into the emblematic Sports Center of OAKA and will be the largest sports facility in the country, which we aspire to be truly sustainable, sustainable and iconic. To produce athletes, to exercise, to exercise the new generation of our country and to get moments of glory, as we want”.
The 108-acre Paiania Olympic Facilities were built in 2002 as a training center for athletics and volleyball. In 2023 they came under the exclusive use and management of the Athens Olympic Sports Center (OAKA) “Spyros Louis”, which in collaboration with Lamda Development is proceeding with their modernization with a completion schedule within 2024.
Specifically, the Indoor Athletics and Indoor Volleyball are being renovated, energy upgrades are being made, the metal structures of the roof are being maintained and damage is being repaired, both inside and outside the buildings. At the same time, the 16 rooms in the hostels are being renovated for the accommodation of athletes of the national teams.
Special care is given to improving access and accommodation for people with disabilities with athletes’ hostels, ramps and disabled lifts.
