Starting his series of meetings and contacts on USAin view of the vote – the day after tomorrow Thursday – for the selection of non-permanent member states of the United Nations Security Council during the period 2025-2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis will be at 09:00 (New York time; 16:00 Greek time) the keynote speaker at a high-level debate on the Security Council, organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in the American metropolis.

Mr Gerapetritis intends to analyze the message of the Greek candidacy, which is condensed into three “D’s”. It is about the three Greek words dialogue, diplomacy and democracy, Greece’s compass in the journey of the Greek candidacy and the Greek term in the Security Council.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs will thoroughly address the priorities of Greek foreign policy, while he will answer questions from permanent representatives, academics and UN officials.

There are six priorities that make up the scope of Greece’s pursuits as a non-permanent member state of the United Nations. In an environment of multiple global challenges, conflicts and international fluidity, these priorities concern the peaceful resolution of disputes, respect for international law and the rules and principles of the United Nations Charter, the implementation of the “Women, Peace and Security” agenda, the climate change and security, the protection of children’s rights in armed conflict and maritime security.

The event will be moderated by the Director of the New York branch of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Thomas Todling.

In the afternoon the Minister of Foreign Affairs will attend the Bazaar of OHE, in the context of which the school of Agios Dimitrios Astoria will dance traditional Greek dances. It will be the only dance of this year’s UN events, due to Greece’s candidacy for the position of non-permanent member state of the Security Council.

On Wednesday, June 5, Giorgos Gerapetritis will meet with the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, with whom they are expected to discuss, among other things, Greece’s participation in the Security Council, as well as the progress of the contacts of his envoy General Secretary for the Cyprus issue, by Maria Angela Holgin, with both sides in Cyprus.

A reception is scheduled for the afternoon of the same day, where the foreign ministers of the candidate countries (Greece, Denmark, Panama, Pakistan, Somalia) will have the opportunity to address a greeting.

Greece has secured a number of commitments from member states of the United Nations General Assembly already much higher than the 129 votes necessary for its election.

This development is the result of a coordinated effort, which includes targeted initiatives of high added value and symbolic importance and events presenting the priorities of the Greek candidacy by the Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis, the Permanent Mission of Greece to the UN and the diplomatic authorities of Greece around the world .
