Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Olympic Training Center of the Athens Olympic Sports Center, where upgrading projects are being implemented, in the context of the wider interventions of more than 62 million euros that are being made at OAKA.

The Prime Minister, accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Sports, Yiannis Vroutsis, was given a tour of the premises and was informed by the general director of OAKA, Konstantinos Halioris, about the projects that have been carried out or are in the process of being carried out.

At the same time, he had the opportunity to “train” and talk with athletes who are preparing for the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games and with their coaches.

“I am particularly happy about the overall effort being made to upgrade all sports infrastructure, 20 years after the 2004 Olympics. It is very encouraging to see our champions express satisfaction for the improvement of training conditions. We have other things to do”, Mr. Mitsotakis emphasized.

“We always listen to the suggestions of our champions regarding the specifications of the facilities and how they should be done. But we must not forget that OAKA is basically a mass sports venue. We want even more people. You were telling me 18,000 to 20,000 a day. When, hopefully, we can repair the open fields and shape the whole area, I believe that this visitation will rise even more”, underlined the Prime Minister.

He added: “And we will put into practice what was the original vision, which unfortunately got lost somewhere during the years of the crisis: for OAKA to really be the point of reference and the meeting place of championship and amateur sports. And of course, the rest of the moves that have been made, the granting of the indoor facility to Panathinaikos, the investments made in the tennis courts -since racket sports are now booming-, the interventions that have been made in the swimming pool, very important, and of course , the rest of the investments that will be launched, I think will turn OAKA into what all of us – and I use the first plural as an athlete – have always dreamed of. So congratulations.”

In OAKA, projects worth more than 62 million euros have been completed or are in the implementation phase, of which the greater part comes from the Recovery and Resilience Fund.

The interventions include, among others, the reconstruction of the Olympic Training Center based on the specifications of Olympic sports, the energy upgrade of the OAKA, targeted restorations in building facilities, the construction of a Multipurpose Sports Center and climbing walls with accompanying infrastructure, the replacement of tartans in the central stadium , in the auxiliary fields and in the closed Olympic Training Center, as well as the reformation of the surrounding area. At the same time, the preparation of a strategic and operational plan and the preparation of a sustainability study of OAKA are being completed, with the aim of utilizing and developing the Olympic complex so that it operates sustainably and emerges as a modern urban destination for sports, culture and entertainment.
