With reference to the Prime Minister’s trip Kyriakou Mitsotakis in Washington in order to participate in NATO Summit that will take place there, the government representative, Pavlos Marinakis, started today’s briefing for political editors.
“This year’s Synod has special symbolism, due to the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Alliance. It will also be the first time that the Summit will be held with 32 Allies, after the completion of the enlargement of the Alliance and the accession of Finland and Sweden” said Mr. Marinakis, starting the briefing, emphasizing the issues that will be discussed on the agenda of the Synod.
According to her, the issues that will be discussed at the Summit are “the strengthening of the defense capabilities of the Alliance and the greater contribution from European NATO member states and Canada to the implementation of the commitments for defense investments, the confirmation of the support of of Ukraine, as well as NATO’s cooperation with partners such as the European Union and the IndoPacific 4 – Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea”.
The government representative also explained that with regard to the commitment to defense spending that will reach at least 2% of GDP, “our country is at the core of the allied countries that exceed this percentage” as he typically said, explaining that the prime minister , has jointly tabled with his Polish counterpart a proposal for a European air defense shield to be financed with European funds and to strengthen NATO’s European pillar.
According to what Mr. Marinakis said, the Prime Minister on Tuesday, July 9, at 12.15 noon (America time), is a guest of the Council on Foreign Relations, where he will have a public discussion with Daniel Speckard, former ambassador of the United States in GREECE.
He will still have contacts with members of Congress, while on Tuesday afternoon he will participate in the anniversary events for the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Alliance.
On Wednesday, at 11.30 (America time), shortly before the start of the work of the Summit, he will have a public discussion in the framework of the NATO Public Forum with Nadia Sandlow, former Deputy National Security Adviser of the USA.
Finally, on Wednesday night the Prime Minister will sit at the dinner hosted by the President and the First Lady of the USA in honor of the leaders.
After the completion of the work of the NATO Summit in Washington, the Prime Minister goes to New York, where on Friday, July 12, at 11.15, he will have a meeting with the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres.
