The division of Cyprus was characterized as an unacceptable situation by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Gerapetritis during his meeting with the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus Mrs. Holgin.

According to diplomatic sources, during the meeting held in Washington, which ended a while ago, the Foreign Minister expressed his satisfaction with the efforts made by Ms. Holguin to restart the talks. Mr. Gerapetritis underlined that Greece is ready, in cooperation with Cyprus, to offer its services to achieve a fair and sustainable solution.

The division of the island for 50 years, the Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized to the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, is an unacceptable situation and every possibility should be used for the solution of the Cyprus issue within the framework of International Law and the decisions of the UN Security Council .

During the meeting, the report on the Cyprus issue submitted yesterday by the personal envoy to the UN Secretary General was discussed, the exact content of which has not yet been communicated to the parties.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that for Greece the reunification of Cyprus and the resolution of the Cyprus issue is the highest priority and stated that he considers it self-evident that the process within the framework of the Organization cannot be separated from the resolutions and decisions of the UN Security Council.
