Ersin Tatar referred to the existence of “two distinct peoples on the island” and to the “inherent historical right” of the Turkish Cypriots to self-determination and the creation of their own state, with the help of Turkey
London, Thanasis Gavos
The military parade in occupied Nicosia for the “celebration” of 50 years since invasion of 1974 defended the Turkish Cypriot leader in an interview on BBC World Service radio.
THE Ersin Tatar objected to the journalist’s introduction about the “invasion” and “occupation” of Cyprus, saying that in 1974 Turkey carried out a “military intervention” that had the character of “restoring order and stability” and “protecting” the Turkish Cypriots who were “on the verge of extermination ” from the “massacres” of the Greek Cypriots.
To the presenter’s remark that the military parade will be perceived as “very threatening” by the Greek Cypriots, Mr. Tatar replied that the parade is being held to celebrate the “peaceful intervention” and to give a message to the world “that the Turkey is always behind the Turkish Cypriots and that he never abandons them”.
He also referred to the existence of “two distinct peoples on the island” and to the “inherent historical right” of the Turkish Cypriots to self-determination and the creation of their own state, with the help of Turkey.
