“The day that dawns tomorrow is difficult, it is difficult for all of us and the issue of missing persons is the most tragic aspect of this ongoing occupation” said the president of the Republic of Cyprus to the journalists attending the event of memory and honor for the Missing People of the Republic Mr. Nikos Christodoulidis pointing out that soon there will be some developments towards the resumption of talks on the Cyprus issue.

He added that “if we really want to honor the memory of all those people who sacrificed so that we can exist today, so that the Republic of Cyprus can exist, so that institutions can exist, we must do everything possible, despite the difficulties – I do not ignore them, the I know first hand – to start the dialogue again. And I think, based on the information I have, the data I have before me, that we will soon have some developments in this direction. Let’s hope that these developments will also lead to the substantial resumption of talks.”

The same time, the representative for external affairs of the Commission, Nabila Masraly emphasizes, in her statement, that half a century later we are witnessing the consequences of the tragic events of 1974. “Too much time has been lost. Today, the Republic of Cyprus, a member state of the EU, remains divided, which has far-reaching consequences first and foremost for the people of Cyprus,” she emphasizes.

At the same time, she expresses her hope for a better future and a united Cyprus, while noting that a real commitment from all concerned is urgently needed for a peaceful settlement based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

He notes that in the context of the general geopolitical changes and crises, we need to join our forces to reach a fair, comprehensive and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem, within the framework of the UN.
