“Fifty years have passed today since the barbaric invasion of the Turkish troops in Cyprus, a period of time during which the occupation of more than a third of its territory continues, in violation of any concept of international legality”, the President of the Republic says in her statement Katerina Sakellaropoulouon the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

“We do not forget the heroes, Cypriots and Greeks, who resisted the invader with unparalleled bravery and sacrificed their lives fighting a superior enemy, while we continue to stand by the families of the missing, until the fate of all of them is ascertained,” added Ms. Sakellaropoulou , underlining that “the definitive vindication of the sacred Cypriot struggle, by finding a just and sustainable solution based on the United Nations Decisions and the European acquis, is our top pursuit and our debt to history”.

The President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou attended the High Priestly Memorial for those who fell during the coup and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, at the Athens Cathedral and then laid a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier.
