The participation of citizens in the events is great
In the presence of the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the Mayor of Athens, Harry Doukas and a large number of citizens started in the morning, in the garden of the Presidential Palace, the events on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the Republic.
Mrs. Sakellaropoulou and the attendees had the opportunity to browse a special exhibition, with 60 works by more than 12 well-known cartoonists, who captured with their pen, in the newspapers of the time, the first year of the Post-colonialism, from July 1974 until August 1975.
The President of the Republic was welcomed by the president of the Hellenic Cartoonists Club, Panos Maragos, together with well-known cartoonists, and then the mayor, Yannis Antonopoulos, presented the works in detail, emphasizing that cartoons and the work of cartoonists act as historical evidence, giving the pulse of political developments.
As mentioned, these works are part of the great Postcolonial Exhibition, which will be presented from October 14 to 19 at the Syntagma metro, curated by Yiannis Antonopoulos and Spyros Derveniotis, and will present works by cartoonists up to the present day, while this particular part of the exhibition will remain in the garden of the Presidency and for the established Reception for the Restoration of Democracy next Wednesday 24 July.
Afterwards, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou together with the mayor of Athens and the public enjoyed the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Athens, as well as the MUSICA choir of the Megaros Musikis and followed interesting discussions of the President with the citizens, on the occasion of this new initiative of the Presidency of Democracy for the opening of the garden to the general public and the anniversary nature of the events.
In the afternoon, the events in the garden of the Presidential Palace continue with the Camerata Junior-Youth Orchestra of the Friends of Music, the String Quartet of the Athens Conservatory and the bands of the Armed Forces, who will perform, among others, works by Greek composers, such as Mikis Theodorakis , Manou Hatzidaki, Yannis Markopoulou, Mimi Plessa, Dionysis Savvopoulos, Stavros Xarhakos, Mario Tokas, which during the junta period expressed their opposition to the dictatorial regime and became symbols of free expression and spiritual upliftment in the Postcolonial period.
