“Internationally, her issue has now been prioritized Cyprus” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs to ERTNews George Gerapetritis. Speaking just 24 hours after she turned 50 black anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus Mr. Gerapetritis emphasized that “the Cyprus issue is the highest policy for Greek foreign policy”. At the same time he emphasized that “the Turkish side has taken a more extreme line”.

As he pointed out to the journalist Kostas Papachliminzos, a year ago we were in a phase of inactivity where the Cyprus issue was not discussed in international forums and as he said since then “we have a series of events that bring the Cyprus issue back to the forefront of international attention”.

In fact, as he said, “the issue of Cyprus has now been prioritized at the UN with the personal care of the Secretary General. of the UN”. He added that the “Cypriot issue is a major policy of the EU” as, as he pointed out, systematic work is being done from the Greek side.

“I have the feeling that there will be mobility in the Cyprus issue,” said Mr. Gerapetritis, saying that the first step is the initiation of a dialogue between Greece and Turkey within the framework defined by the resolutions of the United Nations Organization.

“The solution will come after constant mobility”

Asked about Turkey’s attitude, the Greek foreign minister replied that “without consultation there can be no peace and prosperity” adding that the parties involved should discuss in order to find a sustainable, acceptable and beneficial solution.

Asked what the next step is, he replied that the two leaders, the president of the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot leader, should discuss themselves under the auspices of the UN, adding that if Greece is required, they are ready to provide good services.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and I personally have made enormous efforts to bring the Cyprus issue back to the forefront of international interest,” he noted, adding that the desired solution is the reunification of the island.

Moreover, as he said, “we can discuss without agreeing. We have accepted that there are differences of substance” said Mr. Gerapetritis, estimating “that there is a window of opportunity for us to be able to discuss”.
