Turkey’s position on partition and a two-state solution in the Cyprus issue has not changed, while the Turkish president uses the Greek Muslims living in Thrace for selfish purposes
By Antonis Anzoletou
In the heart of summer, Tayyip Erdoğan decides once again not to stay quiet. The incident in Kasos and Karpathos and the Turkish continental shelf, the reinstatement of the illegal Turkish-Libyan pact, the inflammatory statements against Nikos Dendias and the “Turkish minority” confirm the rule of the “Scottish shower” reserved by the Turkish president opposite in GREECE. The climate may have become dynamited, but what has happened is not able to disturb the “calm waters” that have prevailed for 16 months between the two countries.
What is the different element there?
The efforts being made to restart the dialogue on the Cyprus issue. Whether Tayyip Erdoğan is looking to “confuse the lines” of communication that exist and divert the conversation with the “blue homeland” doctrine, no one knows. He is trying to once again give theoretical substance to the illegal agreement with Libya. How can two countries that do not have adjacent or adjacent coasts sign EEZ agreements.
The open channels of communication between the two states helped this “mini-crisis” pass without more problems. At the same time, Mr. Erdogan, as usual, uses the Greek Muslims living in Thrace for selfish purposes.
The question on the table is where the dialogue with the neighbors is headed in general ahead of the Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting in New York in September, but also what will be done with the efforts to restart the dialogue on the Cyprus issue.
Turkey’s position on partition and a two-state solution has not changed. The international community has rejected such a thing. The possibility that Turkey starts from the theory of the two-state solution in order to propose a confederation, despite what is said, cannot be ruled out. Not that such a thing is accepted at the international level or by the United Nations.
It is a fact that Ankara is trying to take advantage of the cloudy landscape that currently exists in the US due to the elections and the withdrawal of Joe Biden from the presidential race. It is a good opportunity for Tayyip Erdogan to recall the “package” of his aspirations in the wider region.
