Another government fiesta with “plans” on the burnt ones only causes further anger and of course in no way can it cover up the eternal crime against the people of Northeastern Attica, which has suffered a lot from the devastating fires, with the latest one burning a few kilometers from the center of Athens. Obviously, this is where the prime minister identifies the “steps of progress” of his government. Shame!

The necessary discussion for the next day can only be done in stark contrast to the policy of the government and the bourgeois state, which has absolutely no prevention-oriented fire protection planning! After all, the famous government “10-point plan” follows the pernicious well-trodden logic known from similar disasters. It is not going to deal with the consequences or provide a solution to dealing with similar disasters, because it is a continuation of the policy that treats the protection of people’s lives as a cost, that commercializes forests and that has led us to constantly count burned forest areas and people’s properties!

The government, in the well-known logic of “turning disaster into opportunity”, is intensifying the commercialization of forests after handing over the management of forests to timber manufacturers and timber merchants, with the so-called “hybrid” schemes, with a pilot application in its 1.4 million hectares of forests Attica.

The so-called “special plan for the fire protection and restoration of the forests and streams of Attica”, is fragmentary, without any substantial value, since it does not fit into the framework of integrated management and protection of the forests of Attica and combined treatment of all risks (floods , fires, etc).

Accordingly, the announcement for reforestation of 58,340 acres is also causing concern, since it concerns only 5% of the burned areas of Attica in recent years. While the special program “greening my garden – greening Penteli” turns as usual the state-government responsibility of full reforestation and improvement of the burnt forest into an individual responsibility.

At the same time, the compensation measures, as in previous disasters, in no case ensure full and 100% compensation without conditions and conditions for the affected.

The KKE supports with all its strength the claims of the mass organizations of the region for:

  • 100% compensation for damages to those who suffered damage to their property.
  • Ensuring all the rights of workers in businesses that suffered damage.
  • The return of 100% compensation also to those who suffered damage to agricultural crops. The immediate and complete restoration of all infrastructure, electricity and water.
  • The total restoration of the natural and forest wealth that was destroyed. All forest areas that were destroyed should be declared reforestable. No thought for new investments from business crows.

The crucial thing for our people is not to show any tolerance, not to come to terms with this continuous crime at the expense of their lives. To strengthen the fight for essential prevention and protection, in conflict with the “cost-benefit” policy of the EU, governments and the state which results in continuous crimes against natural wealth and life itself!
