On Monday morning, the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, spoke on the “Today” show on SKAI, among other things, about the incidents of domestic violence, violence against minors and also about crime in Attica.
For incidents of domestic violence
As he said there is an increase in incidents of domestic violence this year compared to last year.
“We have 12,459 cases of domestic violence in the 7 months of January – July,” said the minister, while last year half of the cases were recorded, 6,797 cases. Also, this year, as he said, we have 7,467 arrests while last year there were 3,858 arrests.
The minister referred to panic button saying 2,800 installed and activated 290 times.
At the same time, he noted that approximately 270 women have been taken to safe shelters and emphasized that 60, including 70 abusers, are arrested every night.
“In 2024, he has seized 865 weapons, while last year it was only 110,” the minister revealed, saying that women’s mouths have been opened.
“There is now trust. About 55 domestic violence offices have been set up across the country. There are trained police officers,” said Mr. Chrysochoidis.
About the violence of minors
Regarding juvenile violence, he said that this year we have 6,389 cases and 7,706 perpetrators accused of theft, burglary, drugs, robberies, etc., while last year we had 4,300 cases and 5,425 perpetrators.
The minister stated that there is a decrease in the incidents of juvenile violence, however he emphasized that “we still have a lot of work to do”.
At the same time, Mr. Chrysochoidis said that in Attica, imports increased by 692% this year. Last year we had 1,170 admissions, this year 9,274 admissions. And arrests are up 340%.
For the case of the 16-year-old girl in Colonos
Regarding the rape of the 16-year-old girl in Colonos, the minister said that it is being investigated if there is a past in the case.
“I am happy that all these cases are coming to light and being investigated by justice. It is a progress for our society” he said.
For the cameras
Asked about the cameras, the minister said that he believes that “in the spring of 2025 we will have body cameras. There is a competition, it is in consultation, it will come out in the following weeks, until the end of September”.
“I am also personally involved with the government so that there is a tender quickly so that there are cameras. There are currently thousands of private cameras. Official cameras will make it possible for everyone to be aware that they are under surveillance.”
For the Roma
Regarding the Roma issue he said that “these groups are a big problem, but it is not only a police problem. He wants many actions from integration, benefits, schools. But we have work to do” emphasizing that western Attica has shown significant improvement.
For the “cop”
Finally, regarding whether a policeman should be called a “cop” he said: “Why should we call a working child from a working-class family a cop who gets such a low salary and does such a dangerous job and performs such an important task” while regarding the allowance permission to DI.AS which has not yet been given said that it will be given in the next few days.
