On Tuesday, the Political Secretariat meets, which will decide the schedule of the process for when the intra-party polls will be set up
The developments in SYRIZA that were launched by the removal of Stefanos Kasselakis with the motion of censure that was voted in the Central Committee and with the party of the Official Opposition now leading to the election of a new president are intense.
After her stormy meeting Central Committee and the result of the vote, on Tuesday the Political Secretariat, which will decide the timing of the process for when the intra-party polls will be held to elect the new president.
The process
In this context, the Central Committee will reconvene in 15 days, where it is expected to decide the dates for the Extraordinary Congress, which will announce the nominations for the election of a new president of the party.
There are voices that argue that the process should move quickly, such as Pavlos Polakis, who calls for the election of a leader even in October.
On the other hand, the group of 87, which considers the 2023 process to be a mistake, favors the resolution of the conference which will also be programmatic with a time limit for the election of the new president possibly in November.
The camps that have now formed within SYRIZA and from which the presidential candidates will emerge are numbered in three: Mr. Kasselakis’s presidential camps, the one close to Pavlos Polakis and the group of 87.
The candidates for the leadership race
The question that arises is whether Stefanos Kasselakis will be a candidate as he has not opened his papers, but with his statement during his second term that “he will be accountable to the base of SYRIZA” pointing in that direction.
Pavlos Polakis has already announced that he will be a candidate, while Sokratis Famellos seems to be very close to a nomination, but has not yet opened his papers. Also, the decision of the 87 is expected, with the possibility of the partnership with Pavlos Polakis being considered unlikely. However, although Sokratis Famellos is close to the team, one of the scenarios being circulated also throws the name of Dionysis Tebonera on the table.
MEP Nikolas Farandouris has left open the possibility of being a candidate, while Apostolos Gletsos announced his candidacy with his post.
