“Concluding a military cooperation agreement in this way is an approach that will deepen the problems here and further encourage the spoiled ‘Greek Cypriot’ side and is an extremely irresponsible assessment,” said Omer Celik
Ankara’s strong reaction was caused by the defense cooperation agreement signed by Cyprus and the United States.
As reported by correspondent of SKAI in Istanbul, Manolis Kostidisin his statements, the representative of the ruling party, Omer Celik, spoke of an “irresponsible assessment” and a “problematic situation in terms of allied relations with Turkey”.
Mr. Celik specifically stated:
“Dear friends, another question we were asked was about the issue of military cooperation between the US Department of Defense and the ‘Greek Cypriot Command of the South’ Cyprus. I had previously made a statement on this issue in 2020 when the United States of America lifted the arms embargo against ‘South’ Cyprus. The source of instability and the impossibility of a solution on the island is the ‘Greek Cypriot’ administration.
Over here, they are the ones who ignore the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ and the ‘Turkish Cypriots’ with their maximalist demands and therefore, they are the ones who ignore the rights of the ‘Turkish Cypriots’ and the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ in an approach based on 2 constituents based on 2 communities on the basis of equality in the island.
All their demands are illegal and irresolvable” and added:
“We had said it and when the arms embargo was lifted, we said that this would not contribute to anything other than encouraging the ‘Greek Cypriot’ administration in the matter of creating lawlessness and the impossibility of a solution. We had said that it does not serve either peace or resolution ».
He emphasized that: “Now, concluding a military cooperation agreement in this way is an approach that will deepen the problems here and further encourage the spoiled ‘Greek Cypriot’ side and is a highly irresponsible assessment. It is clear that this is an extremely problematic situation in terms of alliance relations with Turkey. Within this whole picture, we clearly see who wants to do what they want to do in the Mediterranean, the Mediterranean is filled with too many warships, to such an extent that there is no room for the boats to get out.”
The representative of the ruling party added that “this was an approach that sabotages dialogue and encourages those who do not want a solution and those who demand lawlessness, while a more solid step should be taken based on a more diplomatic dialogue. As such, it has been recorded as an extremely flawed approach and one that should be rejected. Whatever happens, the Turkish Republic will continue its historical solidarity with the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ in the strongest possible way and, as our President often states, the ‘Turkish Cypriot’ people and the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ will never be alone. The future of the ‘Turkish Cypriot’ people and the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ and its safeguarding will continue to be for us a matter of defense of the Turkish Cypriot people.”
