“We implement projects that do not concern the image, but the everyday life of the citizens” said the regional governor of Attica Nikos Hardalias during the autopsy he carried out on flood protection projects, which the Region is constructing in Municipality of Glyfada.

A little later, during the visit to the town hall, Mr. Hardalias co-signed with the mayor of Glyfada, Giorgos Papanikolaou, a programming contract for the restoration and construction of sidewalks, as well as for asphalt paving, with a total budget of 5.5 million euros.

During the autopsy, Mr. Hardalias pointed out: “We are in Glyfada today, to see up close the progress of important projects, which shield the area, improve accessibility to public space and strengthen “green” urban transportation.” And he added: “Our goal is, through similar actions, to lay the foundations for a sustainable, durable, safe Attica, with quality daily life for our fellow citizens.”

The regional governor observing the cleaning in the stream of Evryalis noted: “We have completed the cleaning in 11.5 kilometers of streams in the southern sector and we are continuing with additional interventions, where necessary, in all 15 streams in the area” He emphasized that this is the second time that the Region has done this year, in the thorough cleaning of the Evryalis and Lykorema streams in Glyfada, a total length of 1.7 kilometers, due to increased risk. “It is another important cleaning project that we always do in collaboration with the municipality. We are proceeding methodically with the implementation of other necessary projects for the protection of the city”, he pointed out.

The regional governor referred extensively to the other anti-flood protection projects such as:

– A tender is in progress for the construction of storm drains in Ano Glyfada, with a total length of 3.8 km, with a budget of 2.98 million euros.

– Studies have been financed, with an amount of more than 400,000 euros, for the demarcation and settlement of the streams of Lykorema and Evryalis.

– An individual flood control intervention on Dervanakion Street will soon be auctioned, with a budget of 545,0000 euros.

For his part, the mayor, G. Papanikolaou, after welcoming the close cooperation of the Municipality with the Region, emphasized that now with its intervention, the “unsolved problems presented by the stream for many decades” are finally being dealt with. In particular, he stated that “it is being demarcated anew and connected to the pipeline that will be built at the former airport of Ellinikos, in order to end up in the anti-flooding project of the wider area in Evryali, in order to eliminate the flooding phenomena on Vouliagmenis Avenue. Mr. Papanikolaou, in closing, referred to an integrated multi-level plan with interventions for the entire region, which was drawn up together with the Region and concerns both flood prevention and infrastructure projects.

Immediately after the signing of the contract, the regional governor emphasized in his statements: “We are proving in practice what we mean by cooperation between the two levels of Self-Government. Because where there is a will, there is also a plan so that we can all be able to bring tangible results with a substantial footprint in our local communities. Step by step, day by day, we are changing everything we need to, with our sole aim being the improvement of the citizen’s daily life” said Mr. Hardalias.

According to the contract, the planned projects concern:

– Rehabilitation and construction of 45,000 m2 sidewalks, budget 3 million euros

– Replacement of the asphalt pavement in a total length of 9.25 km and a surface of 87,000 square meters throughout the city with a budget of 2.5 million euros.

Finally, Mr. Hardalias, accompanied by the mayor, inspected the works for the creation of a pedestrian-bicycle path (at Palmyras and Vembo streets) and the urban renewal project (at ‘Alsous, Kypro, Zerva and Agios Gerasimos streets), while they visited the construction of the Model Special School of Glyfada, which is implemented with community funds.
