They are on the path to digitization Greek hospitalswhich will speak the same “digital language”, i.e. they will come to the same digital level and will interoperate with each other, so that doctors regardless of the region, city, prefecture where they are located can access the national individual electronic health record of patient without having to present the paper file with his tests each time. This is one of the objectives of the project “Improving the Digital Readiness of Hospitals – Upgrading hospital information systems & infrastructure” of the Ministry of Digital Governance in collaboration with the leadership of the Ministry of Health. As he pointed out to APE – MEP the Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou “The strengthening of critical sectors of everyday life, such as health, has been set as a government priority by the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Technology can offer solutions in this field as well. By developing digital infrastructures and applications, we enhance healthcare and citizens’ quality of life. Our goal is for all the country’s hospitals to “communicate” both with each other and with the national medical file, the electronic prescription system and any other structure of the Ministry of Health. This is an initiative with significant ramifications beyond a more efficient way of organizing. Consider how much easier it will be for the citizen if he has all the information related to his health immediately available on his mobile phone, without having to carry files with paper tests, if the attending physician has access to this information, how much bureaucracy we eliminate. As the Ministry of Digital Governance, we operate horizontally for the public administration and utilize technology always focusing on the citizen and the improvement of his daily life”.

To clarify that with the digital transformation of hospitals all data related to our medical history (such as for example diagnostic tests, laboratory test results, radiological images) will be available in the application myHealth App as a result of which the electronic health file of the patient is constantly enriched.

In particular, the digital transformation project of the country’s hospitals aims to promote the digital readiness of Greek hospitals so that each unit is able to cover the national reference level of digital readiness (National Digital Readiness Baseline), which will include the use of the appropriate systems and infrastructures, depending on the capacity of each structure. In fact, by 2025 it will allow doctors to switch from paper patient records to complete digital patient records.

Also, a series of horizontal interventions are foreseen which will concern the basic operational function of the hospitals as well as the function of third parties related to the field of health care. It is worth noting that the agencies involved will be able to interoperate with each other, with the national medical file, the electronic prescription system and with any other structure of the Ministry of Health.

In the context of the action of the digital transformation of health, it is about developing infrastructures and applications, but also adopting the appropriate sustainable digital health solutions that will prevent, identify and also deal with potential epidemics and pandemics (i.e. COVID-19). We should mention that the budget of the project reaches 111,600,000 euros and is in the phase of approval of Contract Plans by the Auditing Court and Competent Administrative Authority.
