Resources from the European funds “for the compensation of those who have been affected by the disasters caused by the climate crisis in mussel cultures and other marine cultures, especially in the Mediterranean”, requested the ND MEP, Dimitris Tsiodraswith his question to the European Commission.

In his question, Mr. Tsiodras notes that “the Mediterranean is considered one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change, as temperatures are rising 20% faster than the global average” and that “the climate crisis and the consequent increase in its temperature of the sea significantly affects primary production and has serious effects on its marine ecosystems, as well as on a number of productive sectors, such as mussel farming”. And he emphasizes that, according to estimates, this year, 60% of the marketable production of species such as mussels was lost due to high temperatures for many days, while the warming of the sea is expected to greatly affect the next harvest as well.

According to the relevant announcement, Mr. Tsiodras asks the Commission to commit resources from European funds (such as the European Fisheries Mutual Assistance Fund) to compensate the affected growers, to proceed with the creation of new financial programs, in case the existing ones are not sufficient , and to elaborate additional measures that will help ensure the viability of these industries.
