The former prime minister called it “wrong to treat as critical” the concerns expressed about national issues
By Penelope Galliou
Without changing his attitude towards the national issues stemming from Greek-Turkish relations, but maintaining low tones and careful distances, Kostas Karamanlis from Thessaloniki, may not have “pulled the rope” further, in relation to the government policy being followed and he has criticized her in the recent past, but has made sure to respond to those who are bothered by his latest interventions.
During his speech at the book launch of Vangelis Plakas “Konstantinos Karamanlis and Thessaloniki”, with careful phrasing, without crowns but with a clear position, the former prime minister described “it is wrong to treat as critical” the concerns expressed about the national issues, “as long as the country remains committed to the national line” as he emphasized.
Positioning, which was taken as a response and a message to those who were disturbed and criticized the reservations or objections expressed by Mr. Karamanlis regarding national issues.
He also insisted during his intervention yesterday that “the concerns and concerns expressed about our national issues are reasonable and real. After all, they are created by the aggression and increasing revisionism of Turkey. Their emergence in essence strengthens our fixed national positions , especially when expressed by responsible lips,” he observed.
Positions, which the Maximos Palace insists on avoiding commenting on the substance, recalling its constant position that “former Prime Ministers, who have led the faction and held the highest office in terms of the executive power of the country, have the right to say whatever they want.
We don’t get into the process of judging their opinions.”
The new intervention of Kostas Karamanlis comes to be added to his series of sharp or strict interventions throughout the previous period and nowhere does he show any intentions to “warm up” the “cold climate” that prevails in his relations with the Maximos Palace.
It also acquires special significance from the time of the new intervention, as there are only three twenty-four hours until the visit of the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hakan Fidan, to Athens on Friday, and it shows his constant intention to ring the bell of vigilance regarding the Greek-Turkish talks .
However, during the visit of the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mr. Fidan in a four-four with the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, will agree that they disagree on issues of national sovereignty, which the Greek side is not even discussing, but they are expected to insist on the preparation of the Supreme Cooperation Council of the two countries to be held in Ankara at the beginning of 2025. After all, for the Greek government, maintaining open channels of communication with Ankara contributes to stability and the reduction of any tensions in the region.
Social inequalities are also a problem
Kostas Karamanlis, with reports on the ideological-social situation that is taking shape in the West, sounded the alarm for the Greek reality as well and underlined the need to urgently form a new socio-economic model.
More specifically, he touched on the issue of social inequalities and repeated the dangers, which he had focused on even after the result of the European elections in June, during his placement in the war museum which was also the beginning of his “removal” from the Maximos Palace. He essentially referred to the risk of generalized deregulation of the political system, due to the reluctance and arrogance of political leaders to perceive the messages of the citizens.
“They are adding fuel to the fire by those who arrogantly and arrogantly belittle disaffected and protesting citizens as regressive, atomized or extremists” he said and referred to a shocking – as he described it – recent public opinion survey where “50% of respondents state that they feel “out of the walls” outside of society that is, excluded and unprotected.
The growing gap between the few haves and the many have-nots is a bomb in the foundations of democratic normality and stability, not a slow-burning one,” he warned.
