On the sidelines of the 7th Ministerial Conference of the Budapest Process, the Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos met with the Minister of the Interior of Turkey, Ali Gerlikaya.

The ministers expressed their satisfaction with the results of the tripartite cooperation between Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria regarding the control of irregular flows at the land borders, while they agreed that there should be an intensification of the cooperation at the sea borders in order to achieve similar positive results.

Mr. Panagiotopoulos pointed out to Mr. Gerlikayas that the common enemy is the criminal rings of traffickers which can only be effectively dealt with by the joint effort and cooperation of the two countries.

The Minister of Migration and Asylum also met with the Minister of the Interior of Armenia, Vakhe Ghazarian, with whom they explored ways of strengthening bilateral cooperation in the field of immigration.

They also discussed the possibility of providing technical assistance and sharing best practices regarding reception and asylum systems and procedures as well as the issue of legal immigration.
