Call to MPs and SYRIZA officials to follow him – Katerina Sakellaropoulou was not sufficient in Tempi and the wiretapping – How she defined the ideological base of the “Democracy Movement”
Premiere with a guest on Stefanos Kasselakiswho announced the founding of the “Democracy Movement” party, held the Prime Time zone of which, every Monday from 21:00 to 22:00, will present news documentaries, interviews, investigations, always based on current affairs.
Stefanos Kasselakis spoke about the ideological stigma of the new party, referred to the MPs and executives of SYRIZA who might follow him, and called on them to reconsider whether they want to remain in their party Koumoundourou after the last event and talked about people’s participation in decisions, through technology.
“Let’s wish the show a good start. Thank you very much! Good start! May the world be informed in this important zone at the beginning of the week about all the important issues concerning our society and to be reminded that today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a very important day especially in our country, because we have a huge problem in this matter and it is the responsibility of the State to be able to provide all the legal framework and institutional framework for there to be security at home”, initially stated Stefanos Kasselakis.
Mr. Kasselakis was asked about the ideological stigma of the new party: “H Center left it is not a grocery store and democracy is not a la carte. A party which is on the Center Left and is deeply participatory and democratic can certainly represent the values of the Left and be worthy of the struggles that the Left has as its banner, the struggles of the Polytechnic, the Resistance and so on. What makes a center-left party different is its internal democracy, participatory democracy. And we did that from the very beginning.
It is absolutely clear what it is. Yes, yes. The feedback on the manifesto we presented on Saturday night was that there is a clear ideological streak. So I’m very glad to hear this being said by analysts. From there, action must be taken. Because it’s one thing to say. Of course we believe that the sea has borders, but at the same time that doesn’t mean we’re going to turn a blind eye to the pushbacks that are happening right now, it doesn’t mean that we’re going to treat these suffering migrant souls in an inhumane way, as is being done right now . A typical example of this, the same as the whole concept of entrepreneurship, is something that was undermined by the area I belonged to and as you can see at the moment I have put it very high on our agenda, entrepreneurship and innovation”.
Mr. Kasselakis launched a renewed attack on SYRIZA, saying characteristically: “Look, the SYRIZA has currently followed a course based on undemocratic practices. Apparently there is no framework for cooperation. From here on, however, the main thing is, based on the principles of our declaration, to have programmatic convergences, but we are not going to sacrifice in the spirit of convergence our basic philosophy, which is for society as a whole”.
Referring to the word “direct democracy” that he used in his statements, Stefanos Kasselakis spoke of people’s participation in decisions, making use of modern technology, however he also referred to an “analytical program” that his government will have, with ready and costed plans, based on priorities , proposals of law.
“There may be other critical decisions that you may need to refer to the judgment of the people. But I repeat that the most basic is at the local government level. Let’s see this come to fruition. Because in this way the local government will be more accountable and in a way that reflects what the people want in their daily lives. For our party, for example, I am telling you an example about the issue of partnerships you are talking about. There, I think it is important for the base of the party to give its opinion on whether it wishes to cooperate with another area or not. But this does not mean that we will march for cooperation. We are on our way,” he said characteristically, specifying what he means by the plan for people’s participation in the decisions.
Mr. Kasselakis avoided mentioning the names of MPs who will follow him, so that, possibly, the new party will set up a parliamentary group. “The main thing is to have a group of democrats, independent, progressive parliamentarians, who will be able to cooperate among themselves. Because obviously, as I have said, I think that by remaining in SYRIZA based on what has been done in the last two or three months, this is like legitimizing what has been done, which are anti-democratic practices. Too simple. From then on it is their right. Personally, I will always fight for them to have the right to their voice.”
Regarding the issue of seats, Stefanos Kasselakis emphasized: “It is a completely unfair compensation. Because on the one hand you have a group of people who lost democratically and left. And on the other hand you have the majority of the party that was excluded. You have the majority of a party that was excluded by mechanisms precisely because they won and expelled. Therefore, one cannot offset. But I am not asking the MPs to come to the Democracy Movement at this time. Shall I tell you why? Because I know very well that I have a lot to prove from now on. But what I ask of them is to think about their democratic duty, to reflect on their responsibility before the world. At the base he found himself excluded from this conference, having traveled many kilometers. And after they have considered it, let each and every one of them decide with their own, with their own criteria.”
Referring to Alexis Tsipras, he seems to have… changed the page, saying characteristically: “His choice is absolutely respected. We no longer belong to the same political space. I thank him for the opportunity he gave me to be at Epitreasia. From there I move on. I move on with a great social we talked again. We haven’t spoken since the conference.”
Asked if he wants to be prime minister, he said: “You understand that necessarily in this country someone will be prime minister. The position at Maximos is not an end in itself. The issue is how you change the society you care about. And as you know, Greeks abroad have a nostalgia for their homeland, many times they get pissed off when they see why Greece can’t fix the bad texts.
Commenting on the election of a new president in SYRIZA, he said: “I will simply say that SYRIZA and Mr. Familiars cannot inspire something different and from then on we move forward independently in a new beginning for the Greek political scene”.
Returning to the possible departures of SYRIZA MPs and executives, Stefanos Kasselakis said: “My intention is not for them to come to me. May they want to come and co-shape the new beginning for the movement. From there they must reflect on what they have seen with their own eyes taking place at the conference and reflect on whether they think society will forget this. That’s why I guarantee you that society doesn’t forget it.”
When asked about the election of the President of the Republic, he expressed the opinion that Katerina Sakellaropoulou should not remain, although he likes her: “No, I don’t think Mrs. Sakellaropoulou should remain, although I like her very much personally. I think that her stance on the wiretapping issue and in Tempe, but especially on the wiretapping issue, was not sufficient. That is, you are the person who also regulates the state. The person who should, in my opinion, the role of the President of the Republic. It is not only decorative, it is not decorative. The role is to be able to intervene in public discourse when you see that constitutional rights are being violated.
Stefanos Kasselakis admitted that he is writing a book… “I want to present the reasons why I am where I am and my vision for the country, based on the political maturation I have had in the last year. So at least someone can briefly see exactly why I’m here. Who am I and why will I not betray them?’
