According to government sources, the current meeting of the Prime Minister is of particular use in the current circumstances and the ongoing war in Russia in Ukraine. Kyriakou Mitsotaki (13:00 Greek time) with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul.
It is recalled that Kyriakos Mitsotakis was invited by the Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew, to celebrate Orthodox Sunday in Fanari and on the occasion of this visit he received an invitation from Tayyip Erdogan to a dinner, which he accepted.
As the same people note, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has dramatically changed security in Europe, while at the same time shaking the international community unequivocally condemning all forms of expansionism and revisionism. They emphasize that in the current security landscape, Greece and Turkey have a special responsibility for stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the southeastern wing of NATO.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself, however, has pointed out in the past 24 hours that he has “realistic and measured expectations from today’s meeting” and that is because, as he has noted, there is no expectation that the disagreements with Turkey will be overcome. Athens reiterates that the Turkish allegations on a number of issues are well known and that Greece rejects and refutes them at all levels and at every opportunity. As the Greek positions are known, the same sources state and continue: “but the fact that we disagree does not mean that we should not discuss. “The channels of communication must remain open at all levels and the tension must be de-escalated.”
In any case, the government reminds that there are issues and points of the so-called positive agenda, which can move forward and improve the climate between the two countries for the benefit of both peoples.
SKAI reports that Mr. Mitsotakis will raise the issue of cooperation with Ankara in the energy field, either through a “revival” of East Med with Turkish participation, or through some other form of cooperation, or through a reciprocal transfer of liquefied natural gas ( LNG) in order to maximize energy security.
The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at 11:00 Greek time will participate in the Patriarchal Divine Liturgy at the Church of Agios Georgios, in Fanari, at 13:00 (Greek time) will attend a dinner hosted in his honor by the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, at the presidential residence and at 16:15 (Greek time) will meet with the Ecumenical Patriarch Mr. Bartholomew at the Sismanogleio Palace.
