Letter to the leaders of the progressive opposition parties on the occasion of the proposal for the candidacy of Christos Rammos for the position of President of the Republic sent by the president of the New Left, Alexis Haritsis.

Alexis Haritsis calls the President of PASOK, Nikos Androulakisthe President of SYRIZA, Socrates Famellothe General Secretary of the KKE Dimitris Koutsouba and the President of Freedom of Navigation, Zoe Konstantopoulou in a meeting in order to present to them the proposal of the New Left and to discuss the possibility of a common position around the crucial issue of the Presidential election.

The letter in detail:

“The election of the President of the Republic is an important institutional moment for the functioning of the state.
In this context, last Tuesday I announced, as you know, the proposal of the New Left to support the candidacy of Mr. Christos Rammos for the position of President of the Republic.

This is a nomination that may, among other things, symbolize the joint commitment of the democratic opposition parties to the defense of the rule of law in our country after the traumatic experiences of recent years, in which the government took the lead in anti-institutional interventions to cover up of the Tempe wiretapping and crime scandal.

During the process of electing the President of the Republic, it is necessary to question the forged consent requested by the Prime Minister who is responsible for the deep wounds to the rule of law and to put a stop to the arrogance of an authoritarian and anti-social government.

I believe that the issue of defending the rule of law should be a meeting point, in order to ensure the observance of the constitutional rules and guarantees, which are the minimum procedural condition for the essentially democratic functioning of the state.

With this letter, I would like to ask you to meet in the next few days in order to present to you the proposal of the New Left and to discuss the possibility of a common position around the crucial issue of the Presidential election, which encapsulates the questions for the future of Democracy in our country”.
