Appeals to Turkey and Israel, humanitarian aid of 8 million. Response from Berlin

The new situation emerging in Syria after the fall of Assad is causing serious concern in Berlin for the next day, while the debate has already opened on the future of Germany’s one million Syrians.

Chancellor Olaf Solz had a telephone conversation with Tayyip ErdoÄŸan yesterday based on what was made known by the chancellery. As government spokesman Stephen Hebstreit reported, the two sides agreed that the fall of Bashar al-Assad is a “good development”.

Berlin’s message to Ankara, according to everything that has become known, was the following: firstly, the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Syria should be respected, and secondly, there should be cooperation with the EU and other partners in the region.

For Germany, after all, Turkey plays a key role in Syria and the wider region. That is why both the current and the next government have every interest in close cooperation with Ankara, as politicians from all parties declare.

The German sub. Foreign Affairs Allena Berbock, for her part, asked that the territorial integrity of Syria not become a pawn of foreign powers again and urged Israel and Turkey to exercise restraint.

Today, Germany simultaneously announced humanitarian aid of 8 million euros for Syria.
