“There is an institutional framework, the Venizelos law, and there is nothing that prevents them (the members of the former royal family) from doing it,” said the minister. State
The Minister of State, Makis Voridis, mentioned the information – rumors circulating that Greek citizenship will be granted to the members of the former royal family.
“What I can say is that there will be no additional legislation. There is institutional frameworkthe Venizelos law, and there is nothing stopping them from doing so. There is the Venizelos law, as long as we do not change the context, if someone wants to activate it, it is there”, initially said Mr. Borides.
In response to the question of how he will be “identified” in order to be naturalized as a Greek – i.e. what information will he declare – the Minister of State stated that he should choose a surname and not a title of nobilityas they are not recognized by the Greek Constitution.
The members of the former royal family “have the possibility to choose, by law, the surname, which is an element of the person’s personality. The only issue with this particular family is that it does not have a surname, whereas in England, for example, the royal family has a surname,” said Mr. Voridis.
“Since we are talking about naturalization there is an issue of identification. Pavlos of Constantine and Anna Maria I imagine there is another. In other Constitutions titles of nobility are recognized, so there it could be for example “Paul, Prince of Denmark, Constantine and Anna Maria”, this is identified. Here, from the Constitution, we have a ban on titles of nobility. So his hiring surname it is an element of the person’s identity,” he emphasized.
