DHW emphasizes in its announcement that “economic and tourism strategies in the international context should be based on respect for regional identities”
The German-Hellenic Business Association (DHW) welcomed the decision of the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) to ban the use of the trademark “TurkAegean” in the European Union. The decision “underlines the importance of sensitivity in the use of cultural, historical and geographical terms, especially when these terms can cause cross-border tensions and misunderstandings,” said Association President Phaedon Kotsambopoulos.
DHW emphasizes in a statement that “economic and tourism strategies in the international context should be based on respect for regional identities”, since, “in a common European market, it is essential that brands do not intensify political or cultural tensions” . EUIPO’s decision is “a step in the right direction for the protection of Europe’s cultural and historical diversity”, emphasized Mr. Kotsambopoulos.
The Association, “as a representative of German-Greek commercial and economic interests”, also appeals to all actors, both in the business and political sectors, “to develop a greater awareness of the consequences of such decisions in branding and advertising strategies” , because “only in this way can we promote a sustainable cooperation, which will be based on respect, cooperation and shared values”. The DHW “will closely monitor the further development of this case and will continue to work for an environment of respect and cooperation in the field of entrepreneurship,” the statement concluded.
