Mr. Tsiodras also referred to the preparation of Europe for the new situation arising, with the election of Trump to the presidency of the USA.
“The political picture we see in the measurements simply means that the government is doing something right and the opposition is doing something wrong. The government is trying to provide answers to the problems and anxieties of the citizens – the opposition is distinguished by negativity towards government policies and by proposals which do not touch the world”.
This was stated by the MEP and press representative of the New Democracy Eurogroup Dimitris Tsiodras, speaking in the morning on the “TODAY” show of SKAI TV.
He added that today there is no one coming forward from the opposition, capable of questioning the absolute political sovereignty of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, convincing the citizens that he is more suitable for prime minister. And he concluded that, with these data, “apparently New Democracy can claim independence again”, in the 2027 elections.
Speaking about the government’s work, Mr. Tsiodras noted that the government constantly intervenes, faces problems, obviously it has not solved everything, but the situation today has nothing to do with the one it received in 2019. And he specifically noted that, as he found in his meeting with the head of the European People’s Party Manfred Weber, he has impressed everyone with the leap Greece made in the digitization of the state.
Mr. Tsiodras also referred to the preparation of Europe for the new situation arising, with the election of Trump to the presidency of the USA.
He said that the preparation has started, there is an awareness of the problem, but “when in Germany they go to elections and in France the prime minister changes every three or so, we cannot say that we are ready”.
He underlined that, based on the Draghi report, three new high-priority policies are coming by the end of February. First, the so-called competitiveness compass, to facilitate investment, deal with red tape and make it easier for new ideas to access funding. Second, the new industrial agreement, which will strengthen the development of the European, but also consequently the Greek industry. And third, the energy union, in order to deal with the problem of high energy prices in Europe, especially for the countries (such as Greece and other countries of south-eastern Europe) that have a problem of interconnectivity with the rest of the European networks.
Finally, Mr. Tsiodras said that if the US imposes tariffs on our products, Europe will respond accordingly. And he clarified that President Trump is telling half the truth about the trade balance of the two sides, as he only counts products and ignores services, where the American side has a large surplus.
