With 348 votes in favor of 345 against and support for Germany Alternative (AFD), the Federal Parliament approved a short resolution of the Christian Union parliamentary group (CDU/CSU) to suspend asylum, rejection of immigrants at the German border – including Asylum seekers without entry permit – and detention of aliens being exposed.

THE coalition (SPD) and Greens failed to block the opposition’s initiative, with the leader of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) and a candidate for Chancellor Friedrich Mertz to achieve a victory ahead of the February 23 elections. Although today’s resolution is not legally binding, the majority it secured indicates that the draft law submitted by CDU and CSU MPs on the same issue could be voted on on Friday. The second resolution submitted by the Union today to support the powers of the security forces did not secure a majority.

“I do not seek any other majority in this House other than those in the Democratic Center of Parliament. If there were a majority today with AfD votes, sorry“, Mr Mertz said in the midst of condemnations of the SPD and Greens. Earlier, the head of the SPD Parliamentary Group Rolf Mutsenich had stated that the Christian Union “failed to say the political center today”.
