Mr. Stylianidis stressed that its – carbonization and funding is now the biggest challenge in modern shipping history
Greece’s positions and politics in the course of – carbonization of the shipping industry, as well as the overall transition to the “green” era, were presented by the Minister of Maritime and Island Policy, Christos Stylianidisin his speech at the “15th Annual Capital Link Greek Shipping Forum”, in Athens.
Mr Stylianidis stressed that its – carbonization and funding is now the biggest challenge in modern shipping history, which requires almost complete transformation of the industry.
In this context, Greece stressed and by extension the Ministry of Maritime and Island Policy:
• They strongly establish the establishment of international rules for the caring of shipping in the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO),
• They are actively set up the process in progress for the timely configuration and adoption of medium -term measures, in the context of IMO 2023 strategy to reduce the gas emissions of the greenhouse by ships,
• They are compliance with the relevant European legislation with the measures to be approved at IMO level in order to protect the shipping industry from any possibility of double billing for the same emissions,
• They are working in the direction of reaching timely agreement with the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) in October 2025,
• They firmly adopt the adoption of a fee/levy on greenhouse gas emissions as the most appropriate, fair, effective and simple measure for global application and
• They are actively involved in the “Clean Energy Marine Hubs” initiative, supporting the need for interaction cooperation of all policy-making stakeholders.
The Minister pointed out that for Greece, the most crucial point is the financial measure, which will eventually be adopted by IMO, to include forecasts that prevent the Bulk – Tramp shipping from the cost of the measure from the cost.
“The planning of the energy transition of shipping must take into account the different categories of shipping. We must ensure that all is given equal weight to maintain healthy competition. This issue is directly linked to the long -term development of Greek shipping and is crucial to us. ” He said characteristically.
Referring to the magnitude of the funding required to move the industry to a future of zero carbon, the Minister of Maritime and Island Policy reiterated, once again, that a mix of financial tools needed.
As he noted, “it will require both private and public funds. And here we need to be innovative! To think “out of the trivial”. To plan innovative financial schemes, in a practical and realistic context. Revenue resulting from a world -based market -based (Market – Based Measure) must be used with sparing and balance. “
Concluding his speech, Mr. Stylianidis stressed that, at national level, it is a priority to ensure that the course towards the AFO will not endanger the sovereignty of Greek and European shipping, as well as the resilience of economies. “Promoting the” green “shipping is one of the central goals of the Greek government.
In this context, in the Ministry of Maritime and Island Policy we have introduced a number of specific political initiatives, such as the support of clustering activities, the modernization of national port infrastructure, ensuring the interconnection of our islands with the mainland through innovative PDP models Promoting the development of all related branches, always through the single application of common rules worldwide, within the framework of the most responsible for shipping issues, IMO.
