by

Greece is strengthening its international presence through initiatives for the Western Balkans, as well as contacts with emerging regional powers with a role at the United Nations and especially in the Security Council, such as India and Brazil, diplomatic sources said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues its efforts to promote stability both in the immediate neighborhood of the country and beyond, through contacts with emerging regional powers.

Specifically, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias hosted a working breakfast this morning, on the sidelines of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, with the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Northern Macedonia and his EU counterparts.

During the working breakfaston the one hand, its accession perspective was examined Northern Macedonia in the European Union and the European perspective of the Western Balkans.

The working breakfast was attended by 17 EU Foreign Ministers, including the largest Member States, such as France, Germany and Italy, as well as High Representative / Vice-President of the Commission Josep Borrell and Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, in his speech, underlined our firm position for the immediate start of accession negotiations of Northern Macedonia, as well as Albania.

At the same time, he stressed the firm support of Greece in the European perspective of the entire Western Balkans, with the well-known heresy, which will consolidate a climate of security and prosperity.

The Foreign Minister also pointed out the danger posed by the action of destabilizing third countries in the region, an action which has a serious possibility of intensifying, in the light of the developments in Eastern Europe. With the strengthening of the role of Greece, as a pillar of stability in the region, the scope of action of third countries is reduced.

Also in the context of promoting international stability and the promotion of Greek positions, the Foreign Minister after the meeting with the Secretary General of the United Nations last week, will go to India tomorrow, where he will be received by the Vice President of the country M. Venkaiah Naidu, and will meet again with his counterpart Dr. S. Jaishankar.

Next week, the foreign minister will go to Brazilmaking it Greek Foreign Minister’s first visit to the country in almost a decade.

In Brasilia, he is expected to meet, among others, his counterpart Carlos Alberto Franco França.

The above visits, in addition to Greece’s openings to emerging regional powers in the Indian Ocean and Latin America respectively, also indicate the importance that Greece attaches to the United Nations.

It is noted in this case, that both countries are non-permanent members of the Security Council, a position for which Greece has applied for the period 2025-26.

Finally, it is recalled that Greece has announced its candidacy to the Human Rights Council in the period 2029-30, as well as for the Presidency of the UN General Assembly in 2035.
