The Greek-Italian strategic relationship in the security field was once again confirmed today during the visit of the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoid, to Rome as part of his participation in the 2nd Supreme Council of Greece-Italy.

The Minister of Citizen Protection signed with his counterpart Matteo Piantedosi two Memorandums of Cooperation.

In particular, the two ministers co -signed the Memorandum of Understanding to establish the institution of the common patrols of Greek and Italian police. It is an innovative action that will be piloted in tourist resorts of both countries, with the aim of enhancing the sense of security for citizens and visitors. As Mr. Chrysochoidis pointed out with this Memorandum, communication with local authorities is facilitated and cooperation is proven. “This initiative sends a clear message of unity and trust between our countries and our peoples,” he said.

In addition, the two ministers have noted the need to strengthen the cooperation of services and to tackle organized transnational crime, which has even prioritized the European Security Agenda. In this context, they signed a Memorandum of Understanding to combat drug trafficking and marketing, a problem that has been critical and requires a coordinated and targeted approach. The Memorandum provides for the intensification of joint research, the conduct of controlled traditions, the exchange of operational information and to jointly participate in international working groups. As the Minister of Citizen Protection pointed out, “with the signing of this memorandum, we lay the foundations for more effective prevention and repression.” The meeting also raised issues of reinforcing the cooperation of Greece and Italy in the field of border protection, through the utilization of new technologies, the exchange of experiences and good practices in migration flow management, as well as the enhancement of the possibilities of analysis and prevention of threats associated with terrorism.

The two ministers Mr. Chrysochoidis and Piantedosi pledged to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries by utilizing as they said every available tool, every opportunity and every common goal for a safer European future.
