A meeting with the President of the Republic, Konstantinos Tasoula, was held by the President of SYRIZA Progressive Alliance, Socrates Famellos, on the occasion of the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza.

The president of SYRIZA-PS stressed: “Mr President, thank you for the meeting. I asked for this meeting with you, because the atrocities, which is evolving in Gaza and Palestine, is for us all and we have to take initiatives. The tragic account is already tens of thousands of dead civilians, including thousands of children. What is evolving is a black page for humanity. The initiatives so far and the government’s choices, which have not been supported by the leaders of other countries and European countries, are incompatible with the serious responsibilities we have. And I think they are also opposed to the country’s national line on issues of both peace and security and life, but also with options for the Middle East. The Greeks, as connoisseurs of the black page of Cyprus but also having the experiences of the Pontian genocide, the Asia Minor Disaster, are obliged to take a stand and intervene. And that is why I came to submit to you the proposals of our party taking into account your position as a higher state authority of the country and the representation of Greece abroad. And the proposals that I want to make are suggestions on both the issues of humanity and the issues of security. At this critical moment, silence is complicity. And that concerns us all. Our proposals have already been submitted to Parliament and publicly. I will put forward other proposals on this crucial issue because Greece and we, Greeks and Greeks, we must intervene and stand with the side of humanity, solidarity, peace and security. And thank you for the opportunity you gave me. [….] I have to submit suggestions for Greece to be on the right side of history, which is the side of humanity and peace. “

The suggestions:

The proposals of the SYRIZA-PS President to the President of the Republic, so that Greece can contribute to the decline of the humanitarian crisis and to the immediate end of genocide and famine in Gaza:

  1. Creation, with the support of the EU, a “humanitarian triangle” between Greece – Cyprus – Egypt, to gather and distribute humanitarian and medical aid to Gaza, and the creation of a European mobile hospital unit in Gaza.
  2. Reactivation of the tripartite form of cooperation of Greece – Cyprus – Palestine, which was formed under the SYRIZA government in 2018, to provide the most possible technical and political assistance to the Palestinian government.
  3. Coordination with the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Church of Greece to support Gaza Christians and the rebuilding of the Church of St. Porphyrius in Gaza.
  4. Greece to invite a multilateral EU – Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern state conference, with the aim of monitoring the ceasefire, coordinating security issues and coordinating humanitarian aid issues.
  5. Recognition of the Palestinian state, as the Greek Parliament has decided since 2015. These proposals are added to the initiatives taken by the SYRIZA-PS President from last week, such as the invitation of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the Greek Parliament.

The statement by SYRIZA-PS President Socrates Famellou, following his meeting with the President of the Republic, Konstantinos Tasoula:

“I asked to meet the President of the Republic today, as a Supreme State Authority and a representative of the country abroad, because the atrocity that is evolving in Gaza is a black page for humanity and concerns us all. Already the tragic account of genocide and famine in Gaza are tens of thousands of civilians, including thousands of children and there is no prospect of a way out.

In this tragic context, I pointed out to the President of the Republic that the government chose to be absent from statements and interventions in order to stop this atrocity. It is a choice of Mr. Mitsotakis who contradicts the country’s national line and with our obligations both in the context of humanity and the obligation of peace and security.

For this reason, I have chosen to submit on behalf of SYRIZA-PS proposals on both the issues of humanitarian aid, but also for the emergence and resolution of the problem in political terms, which Greece can also undertake, as well as the European Union.

Because the Greeks know very well the tragic imprint of the occupation in Cyprus, but we also have the experiences of the genocide of Pontians and the Asia Minor disaster.

Silence in this crime is complicity, and that concerns us all. And we have chosen proposals that correspond to both the timeless role of the country and the culture of Greece and its position in the international community. “
