The statement in detail
I am talking to you from Athens, the birthplace of the Republic. I am a voice among millions. Voices united for Ukraine. Voices united against this war.
For the Greeks, the pain of the Ukrainians is a deeply personal matter. Mariupol, a besieged city, is home to a large Greek community of 150,000. Aid to the Ukrainian people is not a matter of choice for the Greeks. It is a matter of necessity, a matter of principle.
For this reason, we will continue to send humanitarian aid and care for the children of Ukraine in our hospitals. That is why we have welcomed 15,000 Ukrainian refugees, of whom 5,000 are children. And for this reason we will help rebuild Ukraine, starting with the Mariupol maternity hospital.
Today, wherever you are in the world, know this: in the fight against tyranny, in the fight for democracy and self-determination in Ukraine, your voice counts.
Greece is on your side. Together we can stop this war.
