The further strengthening of bilateral relations, the Greek minority of Hungary, the rapid developments in our region, the migratory and the accession perspective of the Western Balkans in the EU were the key issues that today’s meeting of Foreign Minister George Giorgos Giorgos Giorgos.
Mr Gerapetritis praised long -term friendship relations with Hungary and said that “there would be no better example than the Greek Greek community in Hungary, which has been the bridge of friendship between the two countries over the years.” It is noted that the Greek minority spokesman in the Hungarian Parliament, Laokratis Koran, was also attended by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“It is well known that with Hungary we sometimes disagree, but Greece is always willing to go beyond the differences, discussing and looking for convergence,” the Greek minister stressed, noting that the debate was also about the enlargement of the EU, the Western Balkans and their European perspective.
Mr Gerapetritis was in favor of integrating the Western Balkans and underlined the need for stability: “We must work in order to make the Balkans a field of consultation rather than a focus of tensions and nationalisms. In this uncertainty and turmoil, we cannot afford to make another minefield. As an earlier EU member state in the region, Greece will continue to support the EU enlargement process and the Western Balkan accession process. “
He also said that ways of enhancing bilateral cooperation in the sectors of economics, investment and tourism were investigated, and he made a special mention of the energy sector: “The new geopolitical challenges require the shielding of our countries. An area is energy. Greece has set as a strategic goal of becoming a major energy hub, making a decisive contribution to national and European energy differentiation and safety.
As for immigration, the Foreign Minister noted that “we can do more to protect our European external borders”.
Regarding the serious escalation in the wider Middle East, the two foreign ministers agreed on the need to immediately decline in tensions for the benefit of regional security and stability, and Mr Gerapetritis stressed that diplomacy should be the only solution.
“We coordinate our actions at European level, but also within the UN Security Council, in which Greece, as an elected member and in cooperation with other EU Member States, also reflects the voice of the EU,” he said and concluded: “Our priority remains the security of the Greek citizens and the Greek citizens. Already yesterday night, the Greek eating company of 151 people from Israel, including two Hungarians, was successfully completed. When we unite our strengths, we are stronger. “
For his part, the Hungary Foreign Minister said the Greece-Hungarian relationship is successful since, as he said, “last year we broke a record of 800m euros in Greece and the Greeks who visited Hungary reached 100,000 per year”.
He also said that “we will support the Greek minority in Hungary to maintain its identity”, while noting that his country holds its borders loud and strong and does not allow illegal immigrants to pass. “
He also talked about the energy problem his country is facing after a European response to Hungary’s stance towards the immigration, stressing that “Hungary’s energy supply is in danger and there is a risk of doubling prices”.
Finally, you pointed out that the EU’s “package” violates Hungary’s sovereignty over the energy mix and described it as “unacceptable”, thanking Greece for, as he said, “adopts a tactic approach to energy issues”.
