During his posting at the high level conference of the UN General Assembly on Palestine and the solution of the two states, Greek Deputy Foreign Minister John-Michael Loverdos expressed Greece’s complete condemnation of Greece for Hamas’ terrorist acts and called for all the immediate and unknowingly.

Following is the statement by Deputy Foreign Minister John Loverdos at the UN General Assembly:

Excellence,

Let me start by expressing my gratitude to France and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for their leadership and for organizing this conference.

Greece has strongly condemned the terrorist acts of Hamas and other radical groups that have led the region to a downward course of turmoil. We repeat our appeal for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages that are still being held by Hamas. Greece maintains a steady attitude against anti -Semitism and we should continue united in the fight against anti -Semitism and rhetorical hatred.

At the same time, we are facing the most fair humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Safe, sustainable and seamlessly providing a large -scale humanitarian aid, as well as unobstructed access to water and electricity, must be guaranteed.

To this end, we believe that the recent decision of the Israeli government to implement humanitarian pauses to provide assistance through certain humanitarian corridors, as well as providing sufficient amounts of drinking water, are steps in the right direction, proving that the constructive dialogue can bring.

Humanitarian aid should not be politicized. Equally, every assistance model should be impartial, neutral, effective and in line with international humanitarian law. The UN and its network of organizations have the know -how and can play a central role.

Greece is steadily contributing to UNRWA, WHO and UNICEF for Palestinian children, while welcoming injured children from Gaza for hospitalization in Greek hospitals.

In this context, it is of the utmost importance to support the perspective of the solution of the two states, as a key prerequisite for long -term stability and peace throughout the Middle East, especially under the current conditions of volatility in the international environment.

However, rejuvenating the political process requires the existence of favorable conditions.

In this direction, I would like to focus on three basics:

First, the complete dismantling of Hamas is required, which can have no role in governance or future debates. In collaboration with international and regional partners, we must enhance the role and capabilities of the Palestinian security forces in order to ensure the safety of all aspects and to oversee the implementation of a permanent truce.

Secondly, we need a strengthened and reformed Palestinian authority, with the sole control of the legal use of violence, unified legislation, transparency and accountability, capable of exercising effective governance on the West Bank and in the end and in Gaza.

During the first high -level dialogue between the EU and the Palestinian Authority, the European Commission allocated 1.6 billion euros to the Palestinian Authority to meet its immediate financial needs. The fiscal collapse of the Palestinian Authority must be prevented at all costs. For this purpose it requires greater involvement of international and regional partners, while the Palestinian Authority must have access to its tax revenue, improving the liquidity of the Palestinian economy. The Palestinian Authority has already sent positive messages about its intention to implement difficult reforms, such as the suspension of the payment program to prisoners. Although there is still room for improvement, we must continue to support it, taking into account the adverse conditions under which it works.

The Arabic plan for Gaza is a good basis for further processing. Greece is strongly opposed to any Palestinian displacement. This plan describes a framework for reconstruction and rehabilitation so that the Palestinians stay on their land and live with dignity. Greece is ready to participate in the plan, but provided that the issue of Hamas’s disarmament will be treated substantially and definitively. There can be no role for Hamas in discussions and plans for the next day in Gaza.

Allow me to briefly refer to the importance of preserving and protecting the status quo in Jerusalem and the sacred places. We must not forget that throughout the sufferings, the Holy Monastery of Saint Porphyri of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchal Church in Gaza offered invaluable services to the population, regardless of race or religion.

Finally, a regional security architecture is necessary that will fully and effectively guarantee the security of both Israeli and Palestinians, eventually leading to sustainable peace in the region, allowing moderate forces to prevail, facing two radicalization and rearrangement.
