“Artificial intelligence is the new, great, fascinating opportunity for the country,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed in a discussion with Openai CEO Sam Altman as part of an event by the Ministry of Education to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the Greek Government, Openai and Openai Intelligence in the educational process.
The prime minister developed the axes of the strategy the government has prepared, to utilize artificial intelligence tools in public administration and in areas of particular interest.
The first axis, as he explained, concerns “how we can use artificial intelligence to improve the work of governance itself, starting from the Prime Minister’s office, identifying repeated procedures that can be automated and helping public officials”.
“The second sector,” the prime minister continued, “relates to the applications of artificial intelligence in specific disciplines that are of particular importance to us: health, where the possibilities are enormous, and education, which we are talking about today about a truly innovative initiative to integrate our artificial intelligence.
The third axis developed by Mr Mitsotakis is about building a dynamic ecosystem of startups, active in the field of artificial intelligence and choosing to be active in Greece. “We are investing in infrastructure, we have access to significant European funding, we have persuaded Europe to allocate capital so that Greece is a hub of artificial intelligence and to repatriate many Greek scientists in the field. Greece has a large number of top scientists in the field of artificial intelligence, who wish to return to the country or work with Greek businesses and we systematically cultivate this ecosystem, “he explained.
Concluding the fourth axis of government intelligence policy, the prime minister underlined his personal interest in Greece’s role in a global debate on TN’s ethics. “Greece is the country that gave birth to philosophy and democracy. What can be our role in the new debate about her ethics of artificial intelligence? Can Greece become the new center – the new Athens or the new Delphi – in the emerging world of TN, bringing not only technologists but also social scientists to examine the great challenges that artificial intelligence poses? “He asked.
Concerning cooperation with Openai and the role of artificial intelligence in education, the prime minister stressed that “the use of TN educational tools can really help our teachers become more productive” and “the same is true for students who are already using Chatgpt or other tools” Learning in a completely different way “and” this is a huge challenge for me, but also a huge opportunity. “
As a typical example, he spoke of the nationwide exams. “At the moment, our students have access to private tutorials and spend enough money to have this help. The idea of having a personal digital teacher who will help him in preparing for nationwide, completely free and completely personalized, is exciting for me, ”he explained.
Mr Mitsotakis did not fail to refer to the challenges and dangers that emerge from the misuse of technologies. “For us, the mental health of minors is of particular importance, as it is for you,” he told Openai’s CEO. “These are real issues that we need to face. I think we are at the forefront of what I would call ” smart arrangement ” in dealing with these issues, “he added, analyzing how the Kids Wallet application was designed and operated, the digital tool against online violence and digital addiction that parents in Greece have.
“We have to work with the big technology companies. It’s not something we can just do with one arrangement. But I think it is becoming increasingly widely understood that there is a real danger that needs to be addressed, not so much in terms of artificial intelligence applications, but mainly the most traditional social networking applications. Mental health issues are clearly emerging and we have to put a class in this area. We are waiting for technology companies to help us in this discussion. And we hope that we can play a leading role at European level at what I call smart regulation, “the prime minister said.
Sam Altman: Very encouraging adoption of TN in Greece
His special satisfaction with Openai’s cooperation with the Greek government was expressed by CEO of Sam Altman. “We are really excited about this opportunity, with this collaboration. Millions of Greeks use Chatgpt, whose use in the country has increased almost seven times in the last year, while close to 60% of users in Greece are under 35 years of age. So this is a very encouraging adoption of TN in the country, which shows great things about the future, “he noted.
Mr Altman said that for his company that the positive impact of artificial intelligence is a more important observation than that of inevitable progress. “This technology already helps people learn through more personalized and interactive systems, to have better access to health, to create new things, to become more productive. The positive transformation of society that is available to people and countries that embrace this technology is what excites us, “he explained, estimating that this can be a huge” power of good “in the world, despite” some less good issues we need to mitigate “.
Concerning the major changes brought about by artificial intelligence in education, the Openai CEO observed that “when the calculator was invented, mathematics teachers were very anxious and were afraid that it would mean the end of mathematical education”. “Since you could just get the answer from a calculator, it was not clear why you would learn mathematics. But what happened was that with better tools we could have increased demands from students. They have been able to do much more and move on to learning more advanced mathematics, “he explained, predicting that” with artificial intelligence as a new tool, we will see a very similar story “.” Children who enter the education system today will grow with artificial intelligence. They will have this tool, like a calculator for words, which can do unthinkable things and get better. And when they complete their education, they will be more capable, smarter, and they will be able to do more than we can today, “he said, concluding:” This is more or less the story of human evolution. Each generation makes better tools, the next generation learns with them and acquires all the accumulated knowledge so that it can make more and contribute to the next step. And I think this will happen with education. Artificial intelligence will be a key part of the way a student learns and creates an adult in the world. And I think it is part of a great, continuous course of human history that began here, in Greece. “
The Memorandum of Understanding
Subsequently, the “Openai for Greece” Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Minister of Education, Religions and Sports Sofia Zacharakis, the President of the Onassis Foundation, funded by the program, Antonis Papadimitriou, Chief Global Affairs Office Government GTM by Openai Kevin Mills.
The program starts piloting from 20 high schools across the country and concerns teachers and students who will receive personalized education from The Tipping Point in Education, which collaborates with Openai on the use of all the potential of its models. At the same time, they will have access to the latest models TN through a specially designed version, the “Chatgpt Edu”, which is exclusively adapted to use in the classroom with a focus on safety and pedagogical control.
Teachers will be able to create personalized GPTs for courses design, evaluation material and support of administrative work, while students will use technology for personalized learning, development of ideas, foreign language learning and research work.
Next year, the Ministry of Education, Religions and Sports, appreciating the progress of the program, will evaluate its gradual expansion so that more and more teachers and students have access to this technology.
In the context of the Greek government’s cooperation with Openai, it is to be implemented, in collaboration with Endeavor Greece, another program, the “Greek Ai Accelerator”, which concerns the support of the Greek ecosystem of startups that create with the help of artificial intelligence. Through the program, Greek startups will gain access to multi -resources, advanced infrastructures and specialized human resources that will help them grow faster and more strategically.
The program “Greek AI Accelerator” will be presented on Saturday, September 6 in Thessaloniki by Takis Theodorikakos, the Head of Startups EMEA Head of Startups EMEA and Managing Director of Endeavor Greece Panagiotis Karambini.
