Measures to deal with misleading practices observed in most EU countries, which relate to a reduction in product quantities while the price remains the same or increasing, the MEP and a spokesman for the Eurogroup of the ND, is demanding. Dimitris Tsiodraswith his question to the European Commission.
In particular, he asks the Commission what actions will take to strengthen the European legislative framework and to ensure the transparency and effective information of consumers about such changes in the quantity and characteristics of the products.
Mr Tsiodras stresses that in recent years there have been practices of reducing the quantity, size or synthesis of products, while their price remains unchanged or increasing.
Indicatively, he notes that in a relative pan -European survey by the Commission “74% of respondent consumers in EU countries replied that the quantity or size of a packaged product declined, while the price remained the same or increased, while according to 52%, the ingredients and quality of a packaged product were reduced.”
This practice is often used by some companies to tackle production costs without increasing the retail price immediately, notes and adds that the existing legal framework is not sufficient to deal with these practices.
He concludes, stressing the need for the Commission to support the competent authorities in the direction of identifying and dealing with such practices.
