In a long posting on social networks, the Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis explains why he admires the Israel.

In particular, Mr Georgiadis states, among other things, that “these days with very high polarization due to the Gaza war, I have publicly taken a clear position in favor of Israel and many are asking me why I have been so exposed. I could say a lot and obvious e.g. That is the only democracy in the Middle East with respect to human rights, that it is a state that offers immense progress to science to date, having the most Nobel laureates than any other state in the world, that it is a state fighting for its survival, as its enemies do not only demand its defeat but its defeat.

He also notes that “it is Greece’s largest strategic ally and Turkey’s largest enemy and therefore from the point of view of our national interests its support is a one -way street.”

“I admire their state, I admire the Jewish people, and I am convinced that the main source of anti -Semitism was over time and now is envy, for an ancient people, who, although passing through the greatest hardships of all else, are standing today at the point where you are so triumph.” “I wish we could look like them.”

In detail the post by Adonis Georgiadis:

Why do I admire Israel?

These days with the very great polarization due to the war in Gaza, I have publicly taken a clear position in favor of Israel and many ask me why I have been so exposed. I could say a lot and obvious e.g. That is the only democracy in the Middle East with respect to human rights, that it is a state that offers immense progress to science to date, having most Nobel laureates than any other state in the world, that it is a state fighting for its survival, as its enemies do not only seek its defeat but its defeat. Or that the war now waged in Gaza did not start with Israel, but is the result of a miserable terrorist attack, made by Hamas against his innocent citizens. I could also tell you that it is Greece’s largest strategic ally and Turkey’s largest enemy and therefore from the point of view of our national interests its support is a one -way street. But I will not say anything of this, because everything is secondary in front of what I will tell you now, I support Israel because I admire it! I admire their state, I admire the Jewish people, and I am convinced that the main source of anti -Semitism has been and now is the envy, for an ancient people, who, although passing through the greatest hardships of all else, is standing today at the point where it is so triumph.

In January 1982, the Hellenic Parliament passed the law on the so -called monotonous, the greatest change in the way Greek language has written in the last 2000 years. The main arguments for this change then were that our children would waste valuable time from their education to learn the useless tones and spirits, and so in the IT era would be removed from the other peoples of Europe. That night almost no one resisted the logic of the minor effort brought to our country by the extreme populism of the period and which led to the biggest blow to our national identity. Nor had the Ottomans accomplished anything so nasty. A bright exception that night a single MP who took the floor and said that if we do this, not only would our children not know better computer science, but eventually become ill -make, it was the late Konstantinos Mitsotakis. That night in the House in the House and the late Odysseus Elytis the next day were the only ones who told our people that we were committing a big mistake. Today our children are learning the worst Greek than ever and no one would say that in IT exceeds other children in Europe. And it makes sense not to excel, as to become the best somewhere, you need to learn to get tired and discipline first. To be liked we did all the opposite and now we are wondering why we have these black crap.

Now see the example of the Jewish people to understand the difference between us.

In modern Israel, Ivrit, which is essentially a revival of biblical hebrew, but adapted to use as a daily language, speaks in modern Israel.

The great overthrow came in the 19th century:

• Eliezer Ben-Gehunda (1858–1922), a writer and linguist, believed that in order to acquire the Jewish nation again, he had to speak his own living language.

• He began to use ancient Hebrew in his home (his son is considered the first child to speak Jewish again as a mother tongue after centuries).

• Created a dictionary and new words for concepts that did not exist in antiquity (eg “train”, “electricity”).

• Promote the use of language in schools and newspapers.

• At the end of the 19th – early 20th century, Jewish communities that migrated to the places of ancient Israel came from many countries and spoke different languages.

• The choice of revival of the Jews as their common language (instead of Yiddis) has helped to obtain a single national identity.

• In 1922 the British command of Palestine recognized the Hebrew as an official language.

• After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the Hebrews were formally established in education, administration, army.

• Modern Hebrew is largely based on biblical grammar and vocabulary, but with simplified pension and many new words.

• The pronunciation is based on the “Sephardic” (Mediterranean) tradition.

• It is a unique example of a language that was “resurrected” by almost dead and again became a mother tongue of millions of people.

While we decided to move away from a language that had remained unchanged over the centuries, so that our children would not be tired, the Jews, on the other hand, to support their national identity, learned from the beginning the ancient Hebrew that no one spoke by until then. Which of the two nations today is more advanced in digital technology I don’t think I need to explain it to you….

The spirit of the first example I mentioned to you is directly linked to the latter and unfortunately destroys all our convenient excuses for us not to stand out. It is their belief and collective decision as a society, as a nation, as a people to fight their enemies and not negotiate in front of any threat.

Its size is as much as the Peloponnese, that is, much smaller than Greece and its population of 9,740,000, Greece has a population of 10,390,000. That is, we have a much larger area and more population than them. Our main enemy is Turkey whose population is 85.520,000. What are our main arguments over the years, for example, from the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus? We are a small state and our enemy is incomparably stronger because of its population and size.

Let us now sum up the basic, not the only, enemies of Israel around him, we will see that depending on the era and the wars he has given either with Egypt, with Syria, Iran, Hezbollah, the Palestinians etc is over 250,000,000. That is, the Jews are constantly fighting against overwhelming enemies of us, less and having a smaller state than ours. But this smaller state has more than twice the GDP of us, a demographic index (ie their nation to live) huge – in a few years they will have overcome us very much – and have a collective decision regardless of a contemporary leadership, not to give them any enemy. To give an example as painful as it is for us? If Cyprus was a Jewish rather than Greek territory, there is at least one who believes that the Israelis would begged the UN for 50 years to make resolutions to take back the occupied and the Turks would expect to respect international law?

But this is a society that everyone goes to the army, men, and they do not consider it a chore but their duty and that no one is thought of putting medium to avoid his term. I don’t have to tell you what is happening to us, who almost abolished our term under the pressure of political costs, so that our children do not lose their time in the Greek army…. Is it possible not to admire this people? Do not recognize that what they have achieved are worth it and because they deserve they will achieve much more in the future? Do you not really want Greece and its society not to seem a little?

That is why I support the Jewish people and the state of Israel, a miracle of modern humanity, who, while having all these characteristics, remains deeply democratic, respects the other view (see recent demonstrations against Netanyahu in the midst of war), who are elected to the parliament, who are elected to the parliament. It revives its ancient identity, without preventing them from being pioneering in the modern world, science and technology, which can fight hard on their enemies, but who are not afraid of them and at the same time consider themselves a power and not inability to allow the other. They have made a society that is enjoying life, you have to go to Tel Aviv to see the energy and joy that comes out everywhere, while rockets fall around them and do not know if they will live the next day, but they feel and are one of the happiest people in the world, simply because they live in the world.

So yes with Israel and I wish we could look like them!

PS. As a first step to overthrow the course of our collective decline, I would suggest to take the lessons of ancient Greek, our history and mythology by Elementary. We have applied it to Greek education and have found the shocking impact these lessons have at an early age and what kind of characters they shape. But this should not be a privilege of the few but the property of many. The example of Israel shows the way.
