Strengthening measures to prevent cardiovascular disease and address inequalities in access to health services among EU Member States, is being demanded by ND Eurogroup, Dimitris Tsiodras, with a question to the European Commission.
Even making a special reference to “the Greek prevention program and the thousands of lives saved thanks to these preventive examinations”, he asks the Commission if it is considering the implementation of the EU level of successful national public health interventions.
Mr Tsiodras also stresses that “more than 60 million people live with cardiovascular disease in the EU”, stressing that “every day 5,000 Europeans lose their lives due to cardiovascular disease, with the total number of deaths reaching 1.8 million each year.”
He notes that more than 1 million fatal cardiovascular events can be avoided over time through early interventions, and that these data make these diseases one of the most important challenges for national health systems.
In conclusion, he points out the need to exploit EU’s next multi -year budget to move to a more personalized patient care, with emphasis on research and new care models.
The relevant announcement also communicates the entire text of the question, which is as follows:
Question with a written response request to the committee
Subject: Improving access to diagnosis and treatment for people suffering from cardiovascular disease
More than 60 million people live with cardiovascular disease in the EU.
At the same time, every day 5,000 Europeans lose their lives due to cardiovascular disease, with the total number of deaths being 1.8 million each year and more than 1 million fatal cardiovascular events in the next ten years can be avoided through early interventions.
These data make them one of the most important challenges for national health systems.
Given the long -term effects of these diseases on patients’ lives and in view of the forthcoming plan for European cardiovascular health, the Commission is asked:
- How does it intend to enhance the prevention and treatment of basic risk factors? Following successful national prevention programs for other diseases such as the Greek “Prevent”, examines the implementation of the EU level of successful national public health interventions?
- How does it intend to help address inequalities to access to health services between Member States?
- How will it use the next multiannual fiscal framework for the transition to a more personalized patient care, with emphasis on research and new care models?
