“I think there is a general understanding that we need to move faster in terms of building a common European energy market and especially in southeastern Europethat we still face high prices, higher than those in other member states. Therefore, a greater integration of the energy market, through significant investments, through interconnections and networks should be a first priority in relation to our common energy strategy», said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, answering a question during a press conference in Portoroz, Slovenia, where the MED 9 summit is taking place.
“In addition, we had interesting discussions in relation to decarbonisation, preparing for the European Council which will take place in a few days. And I sense that there is a general understanding among the 9 that we need to strike a balance between the decarbonisation targets we have already set and an equal emphasis on social cohesion and competitiveness. And I believe that this needs greater flexibility in terms of achieving the ambitious goals we have set as a European Union“, he added.
On European defence, the prime minister said:The priority of the European Union is now directed towards the war in Ukraine and we are dealing with it. I believe that we are all advocating for a 360-degree perspective on European defence. And when we think in relation to the new projects of common interest, which we think we can promote as a European Union, for example the anti-missile shield, we must know that future threats may not come from the East, but also from the South.
I think we are united because we want to ensure that the entirety of the European borders are absolutely protected and there is the European capacity to protect all Member States especially those on the EU’s external borders».
