by

The war in Ukraine, with the economic, social and political implications of exacerbating the energy crisis and deepening the imprint of the health crisis, were the focus of 7th Delphi Economic Forum which takes place in Delphi, April 6-9 and is under the auspices of SA of the President of the Republic, Mrs. Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Ms Sakellaropoulou said the “war in Ukraine froze historical time and space” highlighting the nuclear threat but also the need for the West to regroup against revisionist and violent practices. In this context, the EU and Greece sided with the law, that is, with the Ukrainian people. “The EU and Greece are now bridges of peace and security in the world and in the region.”

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew sent the message of solidarity and social cohesion as an antidote to crises, whether economic, geopolitical or climatic. In his speech, the Ecumenical Patriarch stressed that the economy is at the center of man and life, but sustainable development and prosperity do not coexist without taking into account the people and the environment that feeds life.

For her part, the new President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, noted that Europe today is being tested by war and its effects. For this reason he highlighted the need to achieve three ambitious goals. First, defense integration, with increased funding and investment in technology and border guards. Secondly, in accelerating the goals of climate change and energy independence from Russia. Third, address structural problems in supply chains, including the removal of risks such as the food crisis.

The impending and growing danger that follows the Russian invasion of Ukraine was highlighted by the President of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mr. Sefik Dzaferovic. As Mr. Dzaferovic said in his speech, the geopolitical risk in the Western Balkans has now increased, which threatens stability in the region and the EU. That is why he called on the EU. to manage the so-called European enlargement as a geopolitical strategy. He even asked the EU. to run for Bosnia and Herzegovina. This move, he said, will be a response to divisive and divisive tendencies in the Western Balkans.

Ms. Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations in Geneva, noted the Agency’s crucial role in stabilizing and preventing geopolitical developments, as well as supporting refugees, during its 76 years of operation. However, he did not fail to mention that the Organization requires reconstruction in order to respond to the “New Realities”, which is also the subject of the Delphi Conference “, which arise after major crises.

The President of the European Cultural Center of Delphi, Eleni Arveler, referred in her speech to the issue of “New Realities” that come after great crises. According to her, after the First World War and the Spanish Flu, feminism, communism and psychoanalysis emerged. Today, after economic, pandemic, geopolitical and energy and climate change, the “New Reality” related to technology and digitization is strengthening. As he stressed, it is a “virtual reality”, where we live “the present of the future and creates two classes: the one that is dominant and has access to technology and the one that is outside.

Ms. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, the former President of Latvia, stressed that modern organizations, such as the UN, have failed to prevent developments such as Russia’s violent invasion of Ukraine. As she said, all international organizations and the international community can condemn, impose sanctions, but it remains a follower of developments. At the same time, we live in an age where we can not separate reality from illusion. Russia insists it is not waging war, and we see civilians being killed. The new reality requires social cohesion and confirmation of the perception of reality, but in practice.

The opening of the Delphi Economic Forum closed with the intervention of Mrs. Marianna Vardinoyannis, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, emphasizing the need for solidarity and social cohesion in dealing with crises – something to which the Council contributes. as it is a meeting point and analysis of top analyzes, views and trends.
